This dude deadass just had a chalk board and wrote down two numbers, no math or anything, just writing shit down

Well if he was clocked at 98 at home than yes he was throwing 106+ by today's standard that tracks out of the hand and not at the plate.

@shloobmm3 right, the "if he was clocked 98 at home" is doing a LOT of work here

@ColeYoungFan Dude was clocked at 96 when he was 42. Reality is these guys were throwing a lot harder than you simply want to believe. Even guys like Dibble, Wohlers, Nenn, etc. were clocked over 100mph the old way. So yes they were bringing it even by todays standards.

this is the funniest video I've ever seen in my life how is this not satire

There's no shot Nolan Ryan was hitting over 105 when even modern day pitchers are barely scraping it.

I actually threw a 109mph pitch back then i just didnt have the camera on

I’m not even trolling when I say Bryce Elder throws faster

It literally crossed the plate at 100 so how fast do you think it was 10 feet in front of the mound ?

If track wasn’t timed these same people would be claiming Jessie Owens was faster than Bolt

There’s 5 guys in our HS local district who throw faster than Feller threw that pitch

Meh. The speed over the plate is what matters. That's what the batter hits or misses. Either way, Chapman is the fastest pitcher in history. It's pretty obvious just from watching the video.

That’s a smooth 89

I watched Nolan throughout his career. He was not throwing 108. With modern radar, he would probably top out at 100 in his prime. This is based on the eye test. I got to watch Aroldis Chapman early in his career. I know what 105+looks like.

If you believe a 5 oz object is heavy enough to slow down 10+ MPH in 60 feet, boy do I have a Saudi Prince who’s ready to make you a billionaire

The fastest pitch ever thrown was by Mets prospect Sidd Finch threw 168 MPH. He attributed this ability to training with Tibetan monks and he did it while wearing a hiking boot.

I threw a pine cone at a coyote when I was 13. We looked at the video evidence and measured it out and determined that I threw the pine cone from 50 feet at 247 mph.

I thought @PitchingNinja did a really good job in his book unhittable illustrating how much nonsense went into these early velocity shenanigans

I don’t understand why people think that we just miraculously pitch faster now. We haven’t evolved to be able to pitch faster. If you could throw hard, you threw hard. It’s just something gifted by God

Nolan was throwing mid-high 90's in his late 40's. Think about that. He casually threw out a first pitch in his 60's at 85, in slacks and dress shoes, this mf'er was different.

Nolan Ryan’s 108 is now up there with Bo Jackson’s 4.13 40 time as the two most aggravating tall-tale piles of bullshit that tons of people perpetuate

Just add it yea it was probably 95 mph but let’s just add 10 to it and now its 105mph WOW….

Its not like we do not have really advanced radar now I have one that tracks bullet speed at whatever yards/meters I want to track it. Any pitcher thinking they are faster than Ryan can measure their fastball 10ft in front of the plate any time they want to.

There litarly proven footage of him throwing 85 mph on the mound when he was in his 60s with radar

It is true. The pitch that was measured for Nolan Ryan would read 108.4 by todays measuring point.

For anyone curious about how they got this answer, I derived it using the drag force equation

They just lied to us all the time, made it look legitimate, and knew we had nothing to look up the truth

Couldn’t you just measure the frames of the recording and figure out the distance of between release and plate and use basic math instead of random abstract add x mph to get a big number

I love Nolan but the physics and math for Bob Gibson pitching would make you think you found the cheat code for Mike Tysons Punch Out. ”Man they gotta lower that shit what the fuck” “Ya we lowered that shit immediately”

Baseball was a better game when Ryan played with more talent, and he was an absolute freak - and consistent. Today's players are more fit but less talented and pitchers breakdown like pussies.

So their math is right.... its a great documentary BTW highly encourage everyone to watch it. What they didnt do, is question the tests. Thats the issue here

There are many Nolan Ryan games on film. He threw very hard, just shy of the range of Miller and Chapman. He also threw way more pitches than them. Safe bet his max was similar to them.

Speed should be clocked as close to home plate as possible. That's the only point that matters, when it gets to the batter. This is nonsense.

It’s weird that the all-time records in sports that measure or time physical feats (like track and field, swimming, weight lifting, etc.) keep improving but when it comes to the fastest pitch, no one has come within 5 mph of a 50 year old record.
