Gladwin Gill, 66, and his wife Amelou, 70 — a psychologist and a nurse — ran St. Francis Palliative Care in San Dimas. They billed Medicare $30,000 per patient for end-of-life care. When the benefits ran out, patients were discharged. They were never dying. They were billing units. FBI SWAT showed up at their home at dawn and announced the arrest warrant over a loudspeaker. That was just the first arrest of the morning. Lolita Minerd, 65, a licensed vocational nurse, ran Topanga Hospice in Artesia. She submitted $9.1 million in fraudulent Medicare claims. Her hospice discharged patients alive at nearly five times the national average. Investigators found patients sharing addresses, recruited at a grocery store, promised $300 a month to sign up. This is Operation Never Say Die — the White House Fraud Task Force’s first major takedown. 8 arrested. $50 million in fraud. 221 California hospice providers suspended so far. California handed out thousands of hospice licenses with no oversight. Newsom told CBS it’s a national problem — not a California one.
