Mars sometimes appears to move backward in the night sky due to retrograde motion, an optical illusion. This happens when faster-orbiting Earth overtakes Mars. As Earth passes, Mars seems to slow, stop, and move westward, although it's still moving forward in space. This "backward" motion occurs roughly every 26 months. The last one started on December 6, 2024 and finished on February 23, 2025. The next one is from January 25, 2027 to April 7, 2027. Retrograde motion puzzled ancient astronomers, who thought Earth was the center of the universe. It wasn’t until the heliocentric model (with the Sun at the center) that this illusion was correctly explained. All outer planets show retrograde motion when Earth passes them.

In my conversation with Judy Shelton, she shared a powerful story involving Janet Yellen, the current U.S. Treasury Secretary: In a July 1996 Federal Reserve meeting, Janet Yellen argued for a 2% inflation target, citing a Keynesian perspective tied to "money illusion." She explained that giving workers a nominal 1% raise during 2% inflation effectively cuts real wages without them noticing. This perspective was met with laughter around the table. John Searle: consciousness cannot be an illusion and here's the argument that makes it undeniable Science has a long track record of overturning our intuitions. The table looks solid, it isn't. The sun appears to set, it doesn't. We've learned to accept that appearances deceive us, and that reality lies beneath. But philosopher John Searle argues there is exactly one domain where this move simply cannot be made: consciousness itself. "Where consciousness is concerned, you can't make the standard appearance/reality distinction that we make for the rest of the world." His logic is simple. When a scientist tells you the table isn't really solid and that it's a cloud of micro-particles, you can accept that. The appearance (solidity) and the reality (particles) are two different things, and you can hold them apart. Same with the sunset. It looks like the sun moves. It doesn't. The rotation of the Earth creates an illusion. Appearance and reality come apart and you understand the gap. Now try applying that same logic to your conscious experience. Someone claims your pain isn't really there, that your awareness is just an illusion. But here, Searle says, the distinction collapses entirely: "Where the existence of consciousness is concerned, the appearance is the reality. There's no way that some guy can come to me and convince me I'm not conscious if I think I'm conscious, I am conscious." This is a structural point about what consciousness fundamentally is. For every other phenomenon, the appearance can be explained away by pointing to what's "really" happening underneath. But consciousness is the very medium in which all appearances occur. There is no "underneath" to retreat to. To say consciousness is an illusion, you would first need to be conscious of the illusion. The argument defeats itself on contact.

In Carlito’s Way, the nightclub Carlito is in charge of running is designed to resemble a luxury cruise ship. It was inspired by a real abandoned club Brian De Palma found in the Bronx while location scouting. However, he ultimately couldn’t use it, but he kept the idea and ran with it. As he explained… “He's getting his boat to go to Puerto Rico to start his car dealership. This is like a big metaphor for where he's going, the boat. So then we proceeded to design the inside of the club like a boat.” Everything about the club is designed to invoke the sense you’re on a luxury cruise. The DJ booth resembles a ship’s radio control room, the circular mirrors along the walls mimic portholes, and the glass murals create the illusion of an idealized ocean view. The nightclub’s multi-level layout is connected by brass and wood railings that give it the feel of a luxury liner’s deck. Patrons on the upper level look down at the dance floor like passengers on a ship’s promenade, with white life rings hanging from the balcony railings. Even Carlito’s office is styled like a captain’s cabin, complete with a model ship on display - a boat within a boat. The name of the club is the "El Paraiso", meaning, "The Paradise" - because that is the ships final destination. Today we went to visit what is now known world wide genocide site . It’s been interesting to actually see the place that has caused such an uproar and strained views of South Africa and how we are perceived world wide . We were let in by a welcoming white lady that didn’t seem To have any issues with 4 black people randomly showing up on her property and wanting to see the “memorial site”. We asked what exactly in their views contributes to a “farm - murder “. She then explained how there is a committee that sits to discuss this and if there is news of a farm murder an investigator goes to research and then reports back . Nonetheless it was interesting to see empty crosses. From row 6 and all the way upto the infamous “PLAASMOORD” letters , most crosses were empty. In another instance bizarrely, there was also a cross of an Afrikaner man that was murdered and his 3 well and alive kids asked to put crosses next to their father’s cross . Does it not create an illusion of more deaths ? As we look forward to celebrating Reconciliation day , let us stop to think if this holiday is actually meaningful or just a bandaid over a more serious problem we still face as a country . Which is a deep unresolved racial divide Nonetheless the lady was nice , open , told us straight that she can actually take us to site as she fears the vehicle we travelled in won’t handle the terrain.
