Unalaq was fully ready to let Desna succumb to his injuries when he got zapped when they were trying to open the other spirit portal. that's very understandable

If it wasn't for those 2 Korra might have been able to beat Unalaaq before he could fuse with vatuu and she might have been able to keep her connection to the past lives.
