I’m not sure I’m ready for a world where an entire orchestra might consist of musicians each playing their chosen ‘instrument’ only on an iPad! But I have to admit I’m incredibly impressed by the talent of Mahesh Raghavan, who has a huge following. It’s clear he is able to extract superb music from his ‘device.’ Indians seem to have a knack for accessing, assimilating and adapting new technologies!

As I wrapped Day 1 of the Innovation Summit North America 2025, powered by Schneider Electric - I have been pondering some of the data points that have been part of my conversations here: - - The U.S. alone will need to find some 200 GW of new energy capacity by 2030. - - HALF of that new demand is driven by AI (you knew that already!) - - To put it into some sort of perspective, as shared a while back by the DOE: Marty McFly drove Doc Brown’s supercool DeLorean back to the future, which required 1.21 gigawatts per trip. - - But that aside: one gigawatt-hour of energy would power roughly 750,000 homes for an hour. It’s not a perfect science, and has lots of variables, but that is a good general rule of thumb. To meet these colossal energy needs (that grow by the hour), we must embrace a different approach. We had the Co-Founder & CEO Rylan Hamilton on the show to discuss building the future of ships. “Because of the Jones Act, we still have mid-tier shipyards on the coasts that can build our vessels. If it weren’t for that, I’m not sure the industrial base would even exist today.” He says the challenge is competitiveness. The U.S. can’t match China, Japan, or South Korea on scale, but he believes the edge will come from innovation and autonomy. “We think we can bring shipbuilding back to the U.S. Not by competing directly, but by out-innovating with tech.”

I was at Mahindra University in Hyderabad Mahindra University last weekend, to preside, as Chancellor, over our 4th Annual Convocation. A particularly exciting feature of the trip was to see the innovation that is bubbling up all over the different Schools in the University. The diversity of the projects was energizing. A couple of examples: The Engineering School students have developed an autonomous E-shuttle that will be able to provide point-to-point unmanned transportation around the 100 acre campus. And Santosh, a new faculty member of the School of Design Innovation, showcased a line of footwear he had conceptualised (along with IIT Madras and ISB) using Gongadi fabric, woven from the coarse, warm wool of native sheep breeds. For centuries, it’s been made by local weavers for tribal and pastoral communities to keep warm in the chilly winters of the Deccan plateau. He’s adapted it to make footwear that local farmers can use which is easy to clean and maintain despite usage in muddy terrain and hopes to take the project forward at Mahindra University Universities must, and will leverage innovation that improves the quality of our lives…

Last week I joined scholars, business leaders, policymakers and practitioners at the Academy of International Business Africa Conference hosted by Strathmore University Business School Strathmore Business School. What stood out clearly is that in a world increasingly defined by uncertainty and complexity, Africa’s experience is becoming not just relevant, but a source of insight for global businesses. Complexity is now an accelerator driving faster innovation, new business models and globally relevant solutions rooted in local realities. From the continued evolution of M-PESA as a platform for financial inclusion and innovation, to the critical role of public-private partnerships, supportive policy environments and human-centred technology, the opportunities before us are immense. Realising them will require bold thinking, collaboration and a shared commitment to inclusive growth. I was encouraged by the depth of discussion and the exchange of ideas on how Africa can continue to lead through innovation, resilience and entrepreneurship. My sincere thanks to Dr. Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor of Strathmore University, Professor Ben Ngoye, Conference Co-Chair, and the entire Strathmore Business School team for convening such an important forum and for their warm hospitality. Last week I joined scholars, business leaders, policymakers and practitioners at the Academy of International Business Africa Conference hosted by Strathmore University Business School Strathmore Business School. What stood out clearly is that in a world increasingly defined by uncertainty and complexity, Africa’s experience is becoming not just relevant, but a source of insight for global businesses. Complexity is now an accelerator driving faster innovation, new business models and globally relevant solutions rooted in local realities. From the continued evolution of M-PESA as a platform for financial inclusion and innovation, to the critical role of public-private partnerships, supportive policy environments and human-centred technology, the opportunities before us are immense. Realising them will require bold thinking, collaboration and a shared commitment to inclusive growth. I was encouraged by the depth of discussion and the exchange of ideas on how Africa can continue to lead through innovation, resilience and entrepreneurship. My sincere thanks to Dr. Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor of Strathmore University, Professor Ben Ngoye, Conference Co-Chair, and the entire Strathmore Business School team for convening such an important forum and for their warm hospitality.
