This doesn't even make any sense. The guy shows examples of indoor scenes or scenes shot in a studio with green screen to show the bad color grading, but then explains that outdoor night lighting for ROADS are to blame for indoor, controlled lighting? Actual retardation.

What a load of BS. Sodium lamps were used in street lighting but never in studio movie production (unless of course they were trying to recreate a real city street on a soundstage). The terrible look of movies today even applies to daylight scenes shot in natural sun.

Hollywood veteran here 👋 This guy is talking out of his ass, he has no idea what he's saying. Yes, everything in front of and behind camera did mostly swap to LED but the LEDs were use are much more advanced than the ones ones you use around the house. Everything is color corrected before the cameras start rolling and color change gels are still used for almost every production. Also, changing street lights only explains night time changes but the fact is we almost always black out existing lights and replace them artificially. Major motion pictures will even replace the street lights if deemed necessary. Drive was the last movie to feature sodium vapors in LA but the Director of photography is technically the one inxl charge of the Gaffer, who's job is specifically to "Paint" there's colors into the image. I'm glad he cares but get the opinion of a professional instead of listening to this nerd.

Not going to dismiss this as a factor, but it's primarily because of shooting over green screen with flat lighting and not making custom lighting for each scene to save on reshoot costs

I think it's mostly due to colorists having bad taste. It comes about when a technician is mostly concerned with having precision-engineered "perfect" high dynamic range images. They're squashing all the light and shadows to fit in the histogram.

Spider noir proves we can still make movies with color in them. its just a matter of studios cutting corners. The streetlight thing is a small problem considering studios have lights that can even simulate daylight in the middle of the night.

Soft lit LEDs are a thing you just put a colored filter around the glass. I made all the bulbs in my house a 20k color temperature and that gets the same effect

The funny thing is, I have LED energy bulb that emits blue, yellow and white (oke single bulb). So they can make it yellow/beautiful again.

No. It has to do with color correction. You fucking retard.

Profilbild von LebAnon

The only correct answer is that it’s because of high dynamic range and log format shooting. There is no other reason. Anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong.

It’s a factor but far from the only reason. You cam absolutely still simulate the sodium light aesthetic

From a technological perspective this seems to hold up, I have noticed lighting has become harder, and has at least given me issues while filming. But I’m no expert.

It’s the perfect lighting (even exposure no shadows) AKa Netflix lighting that looks unnatural. In nature we are always exposed to imperfect lighting and each way a face is lit up says a different thing and sets a different tone for photography or film

Profilbild von Jason Park

not accurate the answer is simply is that colorist have changed their techniques. Color grading raw footage gives analysis paralysis. Studio heads and filmmakers undecided on the best look for the film have to settle on the muted look.

Lol Tiktok is like a game of Chinese whispers. People see stuff, repeat it, and it gets distorted over time. The actual lights are fine, productions are just lazy because digital picks up the slack where film needed smart lighting.

LED lights = electrical process, sodium lights = chemical process, really? The level of ignorance = the level of confidence in front of the camera.

🤨 It was mercury vapor in the 60 to late 70’s. The those crap sodium lights came out in the 80’s and were enforced just to save electricity costs. 🍃 It wasn’t fun to play outside when those lights came on. It made everything look so dull (because of the restricted color spectrum). 😖 I, and most of the people my age were never a fan of those sodium lights! 🤮

It’s really funny because we can literally just do this but they choose not to. We can make LED’s looks exactly like this for virtually the same cost. It the sales thing with incandescent Christmas lights, we could easily just make those same lights but with leds but they don’t

He was so close to getting it. Yes it’s due to lighting. No it’s not due to replacing all of the outdoor lightbulbs.
