Conservative councillor Paul Mason from Broxbourne Council, where one of the hotels housing asylum seekers is located, debates Labour peer, Lord Dubs, who fled to the UK from the Nazis as a child.

Labour MP Sam Rushworth attacked me yesterday in a lengthy statement. His argument: there aren’t many migrants in County Durham yet, so relax while the Home Office puts more on your street. He says about 500, and “that’s it.” The Home Office letter asks for another 150 bedspaces to bring Durham to its ‘allocated number’, did they ask you? Nor I. So it isn’t a total. It’s a running score. What is the allocated number, Sam? You’re defending a ceiling you won’t name. I’ll go out on a limb: more people here agree with ‘hateful’ Darren Grimes than with the MP who thinks 500 illegal men is a reassurance.
