Modern controls in REmake 1 are hilarious because Everytime the camera changes you run straight into the wall or you accidentally run back to where you came.

You also get to play as her if you get poisoned during the first Yawn fight

If you save Richard and then get bit by Yawn then you can play as Rebecca to save chris, BUT it prevents Rebecca from helping with Plant 42 If you let Richard die, No matter what your guaranteed to play as Rebecca to fight Plant 42

Do you have to unlock her route or?

from what i understand there are two different ways you can play as her. i didn't get bit by the huge snake in the mansion so when i went into fight plant 42 it triggered this scene which led to me playing as her. apparently you can also play as her if you get bit by yawn,

which leads to you playing as rebecca and grabing a serum for chris as her

The sad part is I can’t figure out how to get past the fucking shark segment. I’ve looked for a walk through video but the only ones I ever find are for Jill :/

that segment is the same for both jill and chris!! i get you tho i also died a few times my first try
