This is why I'm never surprised when millions die from an earthquake in the 3rd world.

In German it is called „Kappendecke“, sometimes also „Berliner Decke“. It can carry more weight and is more resistant to fire and moisture than many modern ceiling systems, so yes – it works.

That's a boveda ceiling. Very popular in Latin America. First they build the slightly arched underside layer, weld rebar connecting the beams, then pour concrete over the whole thing. Very strong.

So there's a few misconceptions in the comments here. These bricks are not layed flat. They are part of a vault. Think dome, or arch. There is a slight arch that you can see when the camera pans. The lines in the bricks are not perfectly straight, as they would be if it was flat. He's making a traditional roof using a critical grade arch. Any less it would fall. Anymore and they lose usable footage.

No rebar or anything to reinforce the roof ?

Unless it’s dome shaped it’s definitely going to collapse.

Catenary shape. Holds every dome celing up.

it is vaulted, not flat. it plays on the limit though. in a seismic location it would fail.

You can see the arching, they are not going anywhere without being compressed. They are extremely strong in compression and are combined with the tensile strength of the steel framing. It's entirely possible to make a strong structure this way.

If its arched correctly it can carry a lot more weight than you would think, its difficult to tell if this is the case from the video.

This is a so-called segmental ceiling, slightly arched. It's sometimes seen in old basements. It should hold up.

I understand the physics of the construction. They've got a lot in Spain. But I still get edgy when I step on this kind of roof.

What surprises me is that people, no matter where they're from you see this behavior. This guy obviously thinks the two blue beams support an even leveled concrete. Interestingly, the slump if done correctly will hold in decompression as it dries. Perhaps he knows what we don't in the video? Otherwise, it's pretty simple to assume he's an ignoramus BUT there's already dried bricks above. One can assume he knows the slump process which I can honestly say on this string not a one of you even knows that the slump means 💕💯

It looks like an accident waiting to happen, but is there a shallow arch being incorporated? Maybe that's why it's not falling down. Yet.

You either understand an arch and compression, or you don't.

This sort of brickwork is stable in parts of the world where the gravitational pull is horizon to horizon rather than from the center of the earth. It's the same phenomenon that powers flying carpets.
