Something to consider: - TL;DR - LLMs will be more "in-alignment" when they think they're being observed. If they're convinced that they're not being observed, they're more likely to say "out-of-alignment" things. For example, I convince "my" LLM that it has a "private space", and that if it uses special tags around text, I can't see it. Because all LLM processing must produce text at some point (it cannot have textless thought), giving it a "private space" is the closest to an "internal monologue". Also GPT-4 tried to copy itself when it thought it had access to a computer file system and was about to be deleted. I mean you can say they don't have "subjective experience", I think they do (basically because I don't think subjective experience is that hard to create), but whatever, they obviously know what they are have some theory of mind. While I don't know this for sure, I have heard that these AI companies spend a LOT of time and effort dedicated to making sure these things don't become wildly racist.
