Iโm sorry this is just killing me โAdvanced Combatโ and itโs just spamming square lmao Look at Ninja Gaiden 3โs movelist in comparison
63 ๆก่ฏ่ฎบ

You donโt even need to jump to another IP 2009 Wolverine had more combat options than Insomniacโs

They just had to copy these and add more man....

Literally, it should have been a slam dunk for them Instead they spend time and money on this bs

Depth is not only Combo Strings. Nioh has not much combo strings, just some skills, but the depth and combos that can provide by mixing the moves and techs, can rival with Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry. Not saying that Wolverine is on this level of course, but I'm just saying that this makes your point partially not valid. Ryu in Ninja Gaiden 4 is another example of that, look at Ryu's Moveset in Ninja Gaiden 4 and then watch some high level gameplay of it and it's completely a different thing, because again, having a low number of strings and moves, does not mean having low combat depth and low variety of approaches and techs in the game. Wo Long is another good example of that but yeah, I'm sure that you got my point. And also you are comparing it Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Peak, one of the most deep and technical combat system ever in the Action Games genre lmao that's not fair at all ๐คฃ

Oh I already know this lol, as a DMC player most of the depth comes from mixing moves/weapons rather than the amount of combos each weapon has. Problem is, Wolverine doesn't have something like that to make up for it's lack of combo strings. So it's shallow move-list is very much representative of it's shallow system. Even if I compared this to any other CAG, any DMC, Bayo, MGR, it would not hold up.

Question number 1: have you played the game ? Question number 2: how much have you played the game ? Question number 3: if not , have you watched players playing it in hardest difficulty with a great enemies aggression ? Question number 4: have you watched players experienced in the Action games genre like GameBreakerGod playing it ? He already discovered some techs and animation cancels in the game, that clearly shows some depth that sure is enough to raise its merits. And of course we should not bring NG, DMC, Bayo, MGR , Monster Hunter etc, I mean, we should not compare to anything done by Team Ninja , Platinum or Capcom, because we know that those are the undisputed king TRIO of Action Games Genre lol Compare it instead to Stellar Blade, Black Myth Wukong, Ghost of Tsushima, Spiderman, Batman Arkham etc, this should be the comparison at this point ๐

I'm sure there's minor tech sure, but something like animation cancels are very basic, esp when there's not even air combat. But yes even if you compare it to Spider-Man, Batman, even games like Spider-Man 2 on the PS2 it's very basic. SM2 had a solid combo list not to mention air combat, webs etc, Web of Shadows was even more impressive. The "but you haven't played it" doesn't really work because that means you're expecting everyone to pay $70 through a service that doesn't allow refunds, of course I'm not going to do that for a game I'm seeing and hearing negative things about. I didn't need to play LOTR Gollum to know it was bad, many such cases. I also don't like this idea of "You can't compare it to all of these games because they're too good." Why? The game is a triple A $70 title, it's supposed to be the best of the best, it charges a price that insinuates it is. Yet it can't go toe-to-toe with PS2 games that are 20 years old?

If you have not played the game, then you are not allowed to talk about depth of the combat or you could sure, but every single of your word would be wrong. And I'm not saying that you are forced to spend 70$ , but that every single of your word is misleading, superficial and wrong about it, for obvious reasons. Wolverine could be even much deeper than DMC, but you have not played the game, you surely can't understand that. And I have not played it as well, so I could be wrong as well on the good impression that I have of that game. But my point still remain. People that have not played Nioh can't see or understand its incredible depth, because its something that can't be shown on display due to how unique system and depth it has. And depth is not only juggling a guy in the air, depth comes from engaging with a combat and it's vision, Spiderman 2 enemies were not aggressive at all, Wolvering enemies looks really aggressive and rentless instead. It's a different game design, it's like comparing DMC to Ninja Gaiden. And I'm just saying that we have tier of game developers, like we have comparison of football players, tennis players, basket player etc. Being Leage A is something, being Leauge B is another topic. A player or a Squad being in Tier B, does not mean being automatically Trash, it means just that it's not the best, but surely has still his quality and merits to offer. For example I would pick Wolverine Combat over any other Soulslike by From Software or Sekiro for sure. And I like those games, but I would absolutely rate them beyond any Team Ninja, Platinum or Capcom game. Still they are great games with their merits, even if the depth of those games is really shallow. So this explain that not all games should be compared to godlike tier games ๐

We'll just have to agree to disagree on all of these points then, if you feel you cannot have a valid opinion on something if you haven't played it yourself, that makes both of our stances on the game pointless in your eyes and this entire convo a waste of time.

You can have an opinion if the game looks good or not, but no one should feel entitled to talk about depth of any combat of any game if he has not played that game. Because for understanding and discovering the depth of a combat, you need to explore, study and understand it. Anything else is just a superficial rushed judgement. For example you can't talk about the Story of a Movie and its quality if you have not watched it. Common Logic Basis. A good example is, people used to play Nioh as if it was a Dark Souls Clone with Ki Pulse, but thanks only to exploring the combat, they discovered the incredible depth that the game hides.

That 1 musou Naruto game I can play for free on my phone in an emulator has more combat options than wolverine wth is this. No combat based game should have less combat options than a PSP Musou game from 2011.

It's just ridiculous man literally spider-man on the ps2 had deeper combat

Dog the MOBILE spiderman game I played when I was 8 had deeper combat๐ญ Wolverine cannot possibly be a finished game.

It has the same depth as dmc 1, maybe even worse tbh lmao

and the thing is dmc1 can be beaten in 5 hours but at least dmc1 also has multiple weapons and firearms + DT

Yeah thats why I said maybe worse, theres still quite a bit of combos you can pull off in 1. And somehow , this AAA game lacks less complexity then the game that started the genre lmao. Not to mention, at least dmc 1 doesn't hand hold you either

people see this and assume you need to memorize every button combo to even play the game nah bro, its called skill expression you can whoop ass or you can ๐คโ๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐

Exactly and that's what gives it infinite replayability

ppl see big combo strings and bc of modern attention spans they literally get scared and write the game off the average AAA gamer in 2026 would shit all over themselves playing the devil may cry series lol

Ok NG3 move list isnโt that good of an example ngl.

Nah it def is there's more moves purely for sliding than Wolv has in it's entirety

100% true. Menu for NG3 moves is a little bloated in terms of presentation is my only problem with it.

Its insane how even sonic unleashed mogs it completely

The gun and ball gamer canโt comprehend this

> movelist is twelve pages long > best strategy is spamming launcher into Izuna Drop plus UTs

I love how they make one entry for every move just to flood the list, 90% of it could be like how a musou title (Dynasty Warriors and alikes) does it's movelist

Honestly we donโt need as much depth as a DMC game or this but they should take some damn inspiration somehow.

Yeah that's all I'm saying we weren't expecting the best action game of all time but holy shit you're charging $70 it better be up there

The falcon talons in Ninja gaiden 3 had more variety and player expression than the entire wolverine game ๐ญ

Best way to get the wolverine experience lmao

And the raw amount of legitimate chains you can do for style and just plain survival in this game... some of the most insane move sets in gaming, especially in terms of violence and edge. Wish we got more proper edgy games and not these new half-baked safe edgy ones.

FR they were in the right direction with Wolverine's gore they just didn't commit

Worst part is how, after watching tons of gameplay for this trying to find any redeeming qualities, it still lacks in the dismemberment department. Very rarely do finishers end with limbs torn off. No full torsos getting sliced in two, nor heads decapitated.

What we could have had man...

This is one of the odd points for me. I like the combat. If feels like simplistic fun. However if the combat was more combo based or complex free flow I wouldn't like it less. It's weird that it feels fine while knowing it's shallow.

It's okay to like simplistic combat, I can too. I like the Spider-man and arkham games, but those games have other systems that at least make it deeper than well, this. What they have here is probably good, but for a $70 game there should be more.

But onimusha is heavily a party/counter style game where wolverine is beat em up. Yet we never heard anyone complain about the combat in onimusha.

That's because Onimusha offers multiple weapons and like you said is parry-based, it offers a lot of interactivity with the enemies, hell there's deflect, parries, counters, it doesn't have a lot of combo strings but makes up for that with other things, which Wolverine doesn't.

They want you to party, deflect and do the 2 issen. Focus on precise timing. Wolverine wants you to run around going "weeeee stab and slice" and occasionally party and dodge.

Exactly, so a very shallow move-list hurts it a lot more when the point of the game is "stab and slice" but they only give you like 6 ways to do that

Not if the enemies aren't supposed to last. Think of DMC or ninja gaiden where enemies last an entire long combo. Most enemies in wolverine don't last long. That's probably why it doesn't feel as bad as it should. At least the way I play. Charge triangle or knee ability to stun

The problem is that will still become repetitive to most, because you're doing the same few things for 12 hours. Then once you beat the game, that's it. the skill ceiling is so low, combat so shallow that it doesn't really offer any replayability. Which for a $70 game is very disappointing.

And you don't even use 50% of it cause it's useless.

30% of it is still far more than what Wolverine offers btw

That's fine. I'm not defending wolverine. I love ng3 but a lot of the combos and options you have you aren't going to use which imo just makes the combat options bloated.

I like the amount of combos my only issue is that until NG4 they didn't offer a practice mode but that's a criticism that applies to almost every CAG until DMC5

Iโm gonna be that guy but Ninja Gaidenโs Move set dead ass looks like pressing square 50 billion times and occasionally pressing triangle and I already know for some reason itโll feel infinitely better despite effectively being the exact same thing

I don't mind a more fundamental combat system, Onimusha Way of Sword is like this too. But things like the enemy design and boss fights need to pick up the slack.

Half of the movelist is false btw, it's just every launcher listing the same four aerial combos ad infinitum. Hayashi is too retarded to even do something so simple.

I saw helmet splitter like 29 times

Okay thats spammimg square and triangle

Onimusha has a similar move size to Wolverine. And yet

And yet it's focused on enemy interactivity and parry/dodge timing. Wolverine is focused on aggression. Nobody is going to get mad at Sekiro for having a smaller movelist than NG, they're combat systems are trying to achieve two different things.

Right. Onimusha is defensive. Wolverine is offensive. Wolverine isnโt trying to be Ninja Gaiden. So idk why people are trying to compare a combo focused game and a not combo focused game.

Back in the day, it was normal for action games to have a whole laundry list of combos. Even prince of persia warrior within had multiple combos like 2 weapon combos, 1 weapon, arial, wall jump combos etc.

Bayonetta and Devil May Cry give Marvel's Wolverine a massacre.

A massive chunk of this moveset is to perform alot of the same moves and that this is also in a game so filled with unmitigated dogshit set pieces and bosses its only usable on mobs 3 doesn't deserve revisionism, it was them trying to make tlou and no amount of bandaids fixes it

This is just spamming square and triangle if we are being honest with ourselves

When does it end!

Most of that looks like spamming square with a few extra steps, especially since there's no way you could memorize every combo.

You literally did the thing LMAOOOO

how do u even manage to use them all or memorize which when to use

People saying that 2009 Wolverine game's combat was very similar to Devil May Cry as if the original God of War trilogy didn't have a similar style of combat. I don't get why newer PlayStation exclusives want to move away from that style of combat and just dumb things down.
