a lot of this movie comes down to the characters being scared of things that aren’t in their immediate reality to the point that they happen due to not engaging with the people around them. even down to the anti-racism marches, there’s really only one black guy in eddington.

And even then he thinks in his reality if he becomes sheriff he can rise above the stigma of being a black man and prove to Guy Tooley (hilarious name) that he’s worth something
