This is my top ten. It’s a bit of a head scratcher as to why it didn’t do better at the box office. When the topic comes up, I mention the movie, and no one knows what I’m talking about. One movie connoisseur, hated it. So I’m just thinking like; “Am I missing something?”

Casting for the first was perfect and likely can’t be duplicated. Can’t think of anyone in film today who could do the justice to Jack Aubrey the way Crowe did.

What would be much better is a series. There’s plenty of material for several seasons. That said, and seeing the result of several other adaptations of beloved stories, I tend to wish that they would just leave it alone

Sequel? Never going to happen. Which is an absolute crying shame. Russell Crowe was an inspired casting choice. His best film bar none.

One of the best gift's I ever got is a hardbound complete set of the series. I'm in the 9th book now, Treason's Harbour. I wish they would do a sequel, or even a prequel, when Aubrey meets Maturin.

Every page in Patrick O'Brian's books is dense with brilliant text. Compare that to today's books that have wide margins, double spacing, frequent half-page "chapter" headings and three or four blank pages after the frontispiece and the last page. These are all fillers that cheat the reader and reward lazy and greedy writers and publishers. Enjoy O'Brian and Happy New Year!

It's an awesome tale well told. A friend of mine (an 18C Naval Reenactor as I was) made the hammocks for the movie. I think about that every time I see a reference to the movie.

I just watched this with my wife yesterday. She finally agreed to give it a shot. We both enjoyed it. Yes, a shame they didn't carry on the adventure.
