The penalties exist to protect QBs who are trying to protect themselves. Hurts had every opportunity to slide or to go OOB yards earlier. He has a responsibility to himself and his team. He chose to go for every last inch of field and got lit up. Not a penalty. Good hit.

The play can go either way, but Hurts was out of bounds and wasnt playing around with in/out of bounds like mahomes. The defender couldve aborted but committed to the 1st down. It happens so quickly, cant blame him. The real issue was Hurts not being able to sub back in.

The ruling should be that if the runner doesn’t have a foot down out of bounds when the defender starts his tackle motion, then it’s a legal hit.
