Battle Chess was a brilliant 1988 game by Interplay Entertainment that revolutionized chess gaming. Pieces animate vividly on the board, exploding into hilarious, brutal combat sequences during captures. So, instead of the (many) rather dry and standard chess games that existed, Battle Chess took the more playful path. For a while, I tried all the different battle animations, sacrificing pieces , just to see how they would perish. All jokes aside, it got me into chess more than anything else. Did you play it back in the day?

During the 2025 U.S. Chess & U.S. Women’s Championship, the sudden passing of GM Daniel Naroditsky deeply affected everyone in the chess community. At the closing ceremony, Rex Sinquefield spoke with heartfelt emotion about Daniel’s legacy and the inspiration he brought to so many. Rex Sinquefield said: "He [Daniel Naroditsky] was a friend of the Club and the World Chess Hall of Fame for a long time, and many in the chess community and abroad. And our hearts are with those who Daniel inspired, his Charlotte Chess Club, his loving parents. May we all find peace as his spirit lives on."
