What the AI-Slop is this BS app. Stop filling the world with fucking AI-Slop that nobody needs. You aren't solving the core of the problem, but the symptom. Problem = Restaurant. Solution = Restaurant fix noise. Easy as that. Otherwise don't go to that restaurant. A good app would be: Register Db level for each restaurant so anyone can see how fcking loud a place is and do not go there unless THEY fix the problem.
Great app idea - you should go make it.
Let me know when you solve an problem instead of a symptom.

Cool but something feels weird about sitting at a dinner table together listening to each other through headphones, it creates a barrier to real life Would be cool to have an app that lets you discover quieter more chill restaurants, one way to do it could be the Google Maps features that say busier or quieter than usual Then you can just be, free of devices, enjoying each others company
I agree on all points. 1. Hopefully the latency is low enough to make this barrier feel more transparent. The measure of success will be that this is better than putting up with the noise. 2. Sometimes noise is unavoidable as a foodie. Sometimes a restaurant is normally quiet but you have that raucous large group that happens to be there at the same time. 3. I thought about the data collection aspect too. I wish Google would just collect the data and add it on their own.
Agree with point 2, usually the better the food, the more packed the restaurant, the more noise you have to deal with On 3, if the data was available could be some cool shit built
If there’s any company that’s suited to collect this data, it’s Google.
They already ask for train attributes when you use it for directions, packed level, delays, etc. Having this pop up for noise would be huge.
I thought you were going to say that the app just automates booking every reservation at the restaurant under different names so that it’s empty when you show up. Same result? 😂

this is an excellent idea. noise in restaurants has become such a painful factor, making the social aspect so difficult and isolating especially as i grow older (but still love group meals). And places seem to spend 0 on acoustic design. would love to try it when approved!

I initially thought that you’ve created a metric for Google maps review, called “Loudness” to be prepared before coming there. So the moment you are there, app don’t listen to you but overall DB and post average from the visitors to maps score

My company Mutual Mobile, had attempted to build software for something similar when the first noise canceling airpods came out. Unfortunately, we found the latency unsurmountable. Hope something has changed!
What method did you use for the networking part?
From what I remember Live Listen latency was sub 80 ms but not useable for transmission. BT, WiFi, cell etc... protocols were in excess of 300 ms meaning you'd see the lips move well before you heard the person. Much of the latency seemed to be an idiosyncrasy enfcored on iOS so possible that an Android only version could be a work around...
Will try and see what the exact latency is.

@johnarrow Do you have to keep the screen active or are you going a voip route? It's a very clever idea - have attempted it before, but needed more powerful AI to close the gaps of my knowledge

I guess a bunch of people just share this same frustrations in life. I (not AI) just wrote the above post, put in the video, and that was it.
I was at a wedding last month and my Apple Watch told me to leave: 120db and risking permanent ear damage. Always keep my AirPods on me for just this occasion so really hope to try undertone soon!

Isn’t this just the same as doing a regular group phone call while everyone using AirPods? That functionality is already baked into the default iPhone phone app.

You know what this would also be really useful for? Motorcycle groups. Would be brilliant to talk to each other while touring in a group through a beautiful countryside or so. Or at least with the passenger on the backseat.
Distance with groups might be an issue, but same bike is the perfect use case.
I built something similar to talk to co-workers in the same room, like an intercom. Real-time chat was really annoying though, as the lips of the person in front of me were not perfectly in sync with the voice in the headphones. How did you solve it?
It’s not zero latency. But I got it as low as possible.
This is a common problem and I just avoid those restaurants. I applaud your effort but it’s insane to have to do this at all.

Dude, no way! I guess that Canje is really just that loud. Latency is not bad, feels like 100-150ms - I'm trying to solve the echo/talkback problem right now which happens when testing in a quiet room - but might not be an issue in a noisier place.
