I tried out the monkeyball ball idea but it just didn't feel as fun as copying splatoon's movement mechanics. The part on the player's back (and the thing you transform into) is a placeholder --

I'm still running with the idea that you're a toy, but the thing on your back is a token -- think the flat iron or the thimble from monopoly.
