As a beautiful family of elephants crosses the railway track at Madukkarai in Coimbatore, an AI-powered early warning system by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department ensures their safe passage, a sight that fills the heart with warmth. What better tribute to elephants on the #WorldElephantDay than guaranteeing their right to a safe life. Since November 2023, this system has ensured zero elephant deaths on the tracks. We have installed 12 towers and 24 thermal cameras on constant watch, 6,592 elephants have crossed safely. Saluting forest rangers, track watchers, guards, loco pilots and officers who are making this possible. Lets do more of these interventions to ensure long term survival of these beautiful elephant families. It’s a sign of the times: When food and water are plentiful, elephants can aggregate in great numbers without putting too much stress on the landscape. This ecosystem is home to Kenya’s biggest population of elephants. Spanning 50,000 square kilometres, it is prime elephant country. At all our reintegration units the focus is on supporting the orphans as they transition back to the wild. For the female elephants this leads on to starting a family of their own. To date, we know of 77 calves born to elephants we’ve rescued and raised: their wild-living mothers choosing return, so that we might share in their joy. Three of the births in the last year have been in Umani. Babies Sulwe and Zigi, under the watchful gaze of mothers Sonje and Zongoloni, are two of them. At all our reintegration units the focus is on supporting the orphans as they transition back to the wild. For the female elephants this leads on to starting a family of their own. To date, we know of 77 calves born to elephants we’ve rescued and raised: their wild-living mothers choosing return, so that we might share in their joy. Three of the births in the last year have been in Umani. Babies Sulwe and Zigi, under the watchful gaze of mothers Sonje and Zongoloni, are two of them. Let’s Just Stop Abusing Elephants In The Name Of Religion!! Perahera is an event that attracts people from around the world, promoted for its grandeur by tour companies, and attended by Buddhists with deep faith. Each year, between 50–70 Elephants are forced to participate in the procession. Amidst the scorching heat, each Elephant is draped in heavy cloth that covers their entire body, including their head — leaving only their eyes exposed. On top of this, their heads are decorated with hot, heavy lightbulbs. How many people in the crowd truly look into those wide-open eyes — eyes filled with stress, fear, and panic? These ornate cloths are not for beauty — they hide the cruel chains binding the Elephants’ legs. Their front legs are shackled together like handcuffs. Their hind legs are chained together. And often, all four legs are linked, restricting every movement. Is this truly a religious act? Buddhism teaches compassion and peaceful coexistence with all beings. How does this cruelty toward Elephants reflect those values? Today is World Elephant Day — a day meant to remind humanity of the importance of Elephants. In a wonderful demonstration of the lifelong bond they form with the Keepers, many of our ex-orphan mums return to our reintegration units after giving birth to show off their babies to the people who raised them. We have even witnessed several mothers returning to give birth at our units! Every rescue carries this possibility within it. At our Umani Springs unit, we are watching a new generation of elephants enter the world. What began with two elephants in 2014 – Murera and Sonje – has grown into a family herd already featuring four wild-born babies, with more on the way! This success is one of five examples of elephant conservation in action:

Zero deaths. That is the mission. A dedicated team of forest officers, patrolling staff, loco pilots, drone operators and control centre monitors works round the clock at Tamil Nadu’s AI-powered Elephant Control and Command Centre in Madukkarai in Coimbatore to keep elephants safe. In just over two and a half years, the system has facilitated around 9,481 safe elephant crossings ensuring Zero elephant deaths on Railway Tracks, demonstrating how technology, human vigilance and teamwork can come together to protect wildlife. The system has generated more than 7,116 real-time alerts for railway authorities and loco pilots, leading to 3,821 instances where trains were slowed down or stopped to allow elephants to cross safely. Beyond elephants, the system has also detected deer, gaurs and leopards, creating a comprehensive AI-enabled wildlife monitoring network. The Government of Tamil Nadu continues to strengthen the system. AI-powered drones have been deployed for wider landscape surveillance, extending monitoring beyond fixed thermal cameras and providing real-time situational awareness of elephant movements. No system can ever be perfect, and the worry never really goes away. But we must keep learning, improving and doing better. Raising an orphaned elephant is a lot like raising a human child — it requires love, leadership, and the commitment of a lifetime. We make the same promise to every elephant we rescue: To nurture them through their infancy, giving them the confidence and competence to ultimately reclaim their place in the wild. But even after they have grown up and established their independent lives, our orphans continue to return 'home' to the people who raised them. They come back to us in times of trouble — seeking help for an injury or even bringing back wild friends in need. They also return in times of celebration — nearly every ex-orphan mum has chosen to introduce us to her wild offspring. Family is everything to elephants. It's everything to us, too: Our founder, Dame Daphne Sheldrick, was the first person in the world to successfully raise infant orphaned African elephants. Today, her legacy continues through both her own family, who proudly build upon the conservation foundations she laid, and the generations of orphaned elephants charting their own history in the wilds of Kenya.
