Apple’s decision to expand iPhone manufacturing in India despite challenges shows the growing global confidence in the country's manufacturing ecosystem. Thanks to forward-thinking policies like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and sustained efforts by the Indian government, India is fast becoming a global hub for high-tech manufacturing. Just a decade ago, over 80% of smartphones in India were imported, and smartphone exports were negligible. Today: 👉 By the end of 2025, about 25% of all iPhones will be made in India, up from virtually zero a few years ago, when China dominated Apple’s supply chain. 👉 Foxconn, a key Apple supplier, has invested Rs 12,700 crore in India, with other partners like Pegatron and Wistron also scaling up operations. 👉 India is well on track to hit $300 billion in electronics manufacturing by 2027, with $120 billion targeted for exports. Here are the major highlights from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in the last week. 1️⃣ The second round of India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement negotiations made significant progress across key areas, including goods, services, investment, rules of origin, customs, trade facilitation, technical barriers, SPS measures, and economic cooperation. The third round is slated to be held in New Zealand in September 2025. 2️⃣ Held a series of productive meetings with leaders from the steel, textiles, engineering, agri, food processing, and seafood sectors. Discussions focused on boosting advanced tech adoption, global competitiveness, value chain integration, and empowering MSMEs, farmers & fisherfolk, strengthening 'Make In India' and driving our rise as a resilient, Aatmanirbhar global manufacturing and export powerhouse. 3️⃣ The Revised Guidelines for Examination of Computer-Related Inventions (CRIs), 2025, have been released to bring greater clarity, consistency, and global alignment in patent practices. They address emerging tech like AI, ML, Cloud & Quantum Computing, and Blockchain, marking a major boost for transparency and innovation in India's patent ecosystem. 4️⃣ MoUs have been signed to boost innovation and entrepreneurship across affordable housing, healthcare, and EV/clean mobility sectors. These will support startups through mentorship, infrastructure, strategic investments, joint innovation programs, and global linkages- advancing a future-ready, self-reliant startup ecosystem.

Here are the major highlights from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in the last week. 1️⃣ The second round of India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement negotiations made significant progress across key areas, including goods, services, investment, rules of origin, customs, trade facilitation, technical barriers, SPS measures, and economic cooperation. The third round is slated to be held in New Zealand in September 2025. 2️⃣ Held a series of productive meetings with leaders from the steel, textiles, engineering, agri, food processing, and seafood sectors. Discussions focused on boosting advanced tech adoption, global competitiveness, value chain integration, and empowering MSMEs, farmers & fisherfolk, strengthening 'Make In India' and driving our rise as a resilient, Aatmanirbhar global manufacturing and export powerhouse. 3️⃣ The Revised Guidelines for Examination of Computer-Related Inventions (CRIs), 2025, have been released to bring greater clarity, consistency, and global alignment in patent practices. They address emerging tech like AI, ML, Cloud & Quantum Computing, and Blockchain, marking a major boost for transparency and innovation in India's patent ecosystem. 4️⃣ MoUs have been signed to boost innovation and entrepreneurship across affordable housing, healthcare, and EV/clean mobility sectors. These will support startups through mentorship, infrastructure, strategic investments, joint innovation programs, and global linkages- advancing a future-ready, self-reliant startup ecosystem.

Marcos Jr. at the India-Philippines CEO Roundtable with leading business representatives. Discussed ways to boost trade, investments, and Ease of Doing Business. Also focused on key collaboration areas, including health, pharma, IT, science & innovation, education, and agriculture. 2️⃣: Held a productive meeting with Ms. Katherina Reiche, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Germany, to discuss strengthening India-Germany trade relations and boosting India-EU trade ties. Also explored new opportunities for collaboration in key sectors, paving the way for a stronger Indo-German economic partnership. 3️⃣: GeM marked its 9th Foundation Day on the theme Ease, Access & Inclusion, announcing major reforms including elimination of caution money, rationalisation of assessment fees, and reduction in transaction charges, exempting 97% of orders. 4️⃣: India & Russia held the 11th Session of the Working Group on Modernisation & Industrial Cooperation.
