I don't have to imagine it. I can remember it - Romania under final years of Ceausescu were extremely rough. The deepest trauma, was caused by fear generated by power outages. To this day, I cannot block memories from 5yo going at 4am with my uncle to wait in line for bread, oil and milk ratio.

I remember those supermarkets where every shelf was bare. Just bread, cheese, potatoes and some vegetables and cans of indeterminate stuff people stayed away from. Super fun.
