In October 2023, an Ethiopian woman boarded a flight home from Beirut for the last time after 25 years of working as a housekeeper. A flight attendant guided her to the front of the plane and pulled back a curtain. Standing there in a pilot’s uniform, holding flowers and a cake, was her son. Minalu Mergiya arrived in Lebanon in the late 1990s at 21 years old.
