My mother is from Scotland and the fact that they have to have a license for every tv. Not just one but every one in their home cracks me the fuck up!

Tbh, i've known a lot of door to door people and if you're really not interested this is actually the best thing to do so they can keep pushin. If you get the wrong one (Kirby Vacuum) you'll lose legit hours of your life trying to be polite to them 😅

I actually had a friend who sold vacuums door to door years ago. He didn’t do that for long

Because Americans don't seem to understand: no, you don't need to have a licence to buy, own or use a TV. You need a licence to watch live broadcast TV, it's to fund the BBC which is supposed to be an impartial news and entertainment service. In theory it's the perfect system, everyone pays in, everyone gets a high quality, truthful news service to inform them of how their government is screwing them over. Problem is that the government controls the BBC by appointing the directors and holding the purse strings so the BBC isn't actually impartial it's pro-government* (whoever the government of the day is). However as most live TV is complete rubbish that caters to the lowest IQs in society and streaming services are infinitely better, and remember you only need the licence to watch live TV, there's really no need to have a TV licence in the UK. I first moved out of my parents nearly 20 years ago and I've never once paid a penny towards a TV licence and yet I've owned 5 or 6 different TVs during that time. *there are other issues with the BBC but it mostly stems from their fear of upsetting whoever is currently in government.

I was at my dad's in Germany and a "Firewood Inspector" came by to test the humidity content of his firewood. I knew then that I would never move back to Germany to live.
