Here's a simplified explanation of how immune cells kill cancer cells: Recognition: Immune cells, such as T cells and natural killer (NK) cells, constantly patrol the body, looking for abnormal cells. Cancer cells often display unique markers or antigens on their surface that differentiate them from healthy cells. Immune cells can recognize these markers as foreign and initiate an immune response. Activation: Once a cancer cell is recognized, immune cells become activated and undergo a series of changes that prepare them to attack. This activation process can involve the release of signaling molecules, the recruitment of other immune cells, and the production of toxic substances. Targeting: Activated immune cells can directly target and bind to cancer cells through specific receptors on their surface. This binding can trigger a series of events that lead to the destruction of the cancer cell. Destruction: Immune cells can kill cancer cells through various mechanisms, including:Cytotoxicity: T cells and NK cells can release toxic substances, such as perforin and granzymes, that create pores in the cancer cell membrane and induce cell death. Apoptosis: Immune cells can also trigger a process called apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in cancer cells by activating specific signaling pathways. Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC): Antibodies produced by B cells can bind to specific antigens on the surface of cancer cells, marking them for destruction by immune cells such as NK cells and macrophages. Memory: After an immune response, some immune cells develop into memory cells. These cells can remember the specific cancer cell antigens they encountered and mount a faster and more effective response if they encounter the same cancer cells again in the future.
