Now consider this note to the rule: If a player, who satisfied (a) and (b), but has not satisfied (c), contacts the ground and loses control of the ball, it is an incomplete pass if the ball hits the ground before he regains control, or if he regains control out of bounds. Because Cooks did lose control of the ball when he contacted the ground and the ball never contacted the ground, it was ruled an interception by Denver.

Was it close? Yes! Did refs get it wrong? No. Brandin Cooks DID NOT maintain possession all the way through. Both men had hands on the ball, but Cooks instantly loses grip once he hits the ground. Therefore, it’s a live ball until FULLY possessed or it touches grass.

This is a textbook example of why the "ball to hand" rule exists. According to IFAB Law 12, a handball is not an offense if the ball is hit on the hand or arm directly from a teammate’s kick or header at close range. Vitinha smashed the ball into Neves from point-blank range and so, it is classified as “unpreventable contact”, the rule is superseded by proximity. Neves has zero reaction time to move his arm when the ball is coming off a teammate’s foot from two yards away. There’s also the fact that it was a defensive clearance and not an opponent's shot or a goal-bound ball, there is no "unfair advantage" gained. So, this wasn’t a pen, IMO

This is NOT a foul. Thomas legally gets to the ball and knocks the ball loose prior to any contact. The leg to leg contact is incidental once the ball is clearly loose. This was correctly judged in real time as a no call as were the subsequent technical fouls.

As soon as Pickett realised Waterman was going to take possession of the ball he decelerates, lowers his body and drops his right arm in an attempt to minimise impact before making inevitable contact to Waterman.
