#RobloxDev One of Roblox's biggest problems isn't just monetization. It's that we've slowly accepted the idea that games made for kids don't have to be good. Somewhere along the way, "it's for kids" stopped being a target audience and started becoming an excuse. An excuse for shallow gameplay, lazy garbage, and games designed to maximize engagement instead of creating memorable experiences. You see this outside of games too. Whenever a movie or show for kids gets criticized, one of the first responses is, "Well, it's for kids." As if that somehow excuses lower standards. But the best family movies are loved by both kids and adults because they're simply well made. They respect their audience instead of talking down to them. Roblox used to feel more like that. Games like Work at a Pizza Place and Natural Disaster Survival weren't perfect, but they were built around fun ideas instead of engagement metrics. Even early simulators like Bubblegum Simulator had a level of charm and respect for their audience before the genre became flooded with trend chasing brainrot games built around AI garbage. The problem isn't that kids have lower standards. It's that adults stopped believing quality products for kids matter. That's the philosophy behind the side project I've been working on Beeconomy. It's made with kids in mind, but I don't want to talk down to them. I want to make something adults can enjoy too. Something built with care instead of optimized to squeeze every dollar out of its audience. Making a game for kids shouldn't mean making a worse game. Kids deserve better from us. Some games had a wonderfully soothing and relaxing vibe - usually the slow paced "build your empire" games. Few have done it better than Anno 1602 (Max Design, 1998), which I consider among the best ever of its kind. I can't think of too many Austrian game studios, MAX Design being the rare exception. Generally, games that were created in and for the German speaking market, didn't do that well outside of those, but the first Anno game (many, many sequels followed) was so incredibly popular, that it remained the #1 selling game in Germany for 5 years until 2003, and its success helped it boost sales overseas, too. Total sales for Anno 1602 eventually closed in on 3 million, an unheard number for a small game studio at the time. What was normally a male dominated industry, got turned on its head a bit, with a large portion of the Anno 1602 players being female. The Anno series had 7 more sequels, the latest one being published in 2025.

Do too many young people lack an appetite/resilience for working? Why are so many 16 to 24-year-olds claiming they're too ill to work? Obviously the welfare system is full of perverse incentives - you can be better off on benefits than with a job. But it seems there are deeper problems eating away at generational resilience - eg, the medicalisation of everyday problems, or the fact that many young people have internalised the Lockdown lesson that health trumps jobs, school, economy etc...

I think most people would be surprised to hear that games used to run from cassette tapes. To be honest, I’m not from the generation that actually played games directly from cassette tapes either, so I can’t completely relate. But after recreating the experience with old hardware, I found myself thinking about how kids back then must have gathered around a computer, excitedly waiting for those long loading times to finally finish. It almost felt like I had traveled back to that era myself. Small games could take around 5–10 minutes to load, while larger games around 1MB could take nearly 30 minutes. Before trying cassette tape gaming myself, I had so many questions about how it actually worked. Does the tape keep spinning while the game is running? Do larger games require flipping to Side A or Side B? If you press the stop button, does the game stop too? I had a lot of questions like that, but the way it actually worked was that the computer first loaded all the data stored on the tape into memory. After that, the game would continue running independently without needing the tape anymore. Even now, I still find it fascinating and surprising. I can only imagine how incredible it must have felt for people experiencing it for the first time back in the 1980s.

Too many rapists are being given lenient sentences. David Lammy is proposing an arbitrary target to reduce the number of young people in custody. He also wants to treat under 25s like children in sentencing. Labour want to give 16 year olds the vote, yet believe a 23-year-old rapist is too young to be held accountable for his actions. It was shameful the Government won’t refer his sentence for being unduly lenient.

The reason I got into game collecting was the Neo Geo MVS arcade system. Around 2005, I came across an arcade game community where modders gathered—people who converted arcade games so they could be played at home on consoles. While being active in that community for a long time, I started collecting MVS games one by one. Eventually, that expanded into collecting console systems, PC games, and later even full arcade cabinets. I also began collecting Neo Geo AES from that time. Although I collect many kinds of games, the Neo Geo series is especially meaningful to me.

According to Rainn, every 68 seconds an American is sexually assaulted. It’s crucial that our society works together to create safer places for people who are being abused & need help. Too often survivors are gaslit & not believed when they speak up & ask for help which also enables abuser to continue to hurt. Many who are being abused don’t have a support system & safe place to go to/someone they can confide in. Far too many people feel alone & need help. One time being abused is too many & one person being abused is too many. You deserve to feel safe. I have the utmost respect for the medical field & people who work each day to save lives. Whether it’s a doctor’s appointment or someplace else, we need to work together to ensure survivors feel heard and supported. Thank you for taking the time to watch this video.
