I did not know there was a federal private member’s bill (Bill C-306) in 2011 that would have required MPs who crossed the floor to vacate their seat and run in a by-election under their new party affiliation. The Conservatives who were in power then voted overwhelmingly against it, arguing it undermined MPs’ independence and conflicted with Canada’s parliamentary system. Amazing when you consider their rhetoric today. The bill was defeated at second reading. Which raises an obvious question: why did Pierre Poilievre, who now suggests floor-crossing renders Carney’s majority “illegitimate,” vote against this bill at the time? We hear MPs across the chamber object — “No!” — but she maintains, “Yes they do.” If we can't even agree on the facts of a statement that says "the College has concluded that it cannot support the Bill in its current form" - how are we meant to have an honest debate? This is not Parliament at its best.

My view is that Members of Parliament are meant to legislate, not implement. The Constituency Development Fund (CDF) has diverted a large number of MPs from these fundamental duties by shifting their focus to constructing roads, hospitals, and other development projects which are used to try and win over voters. The original CDF Act was declared unconstitutional in 2015 for breaching the separation of powers, leading to the revised NG-CDF Act. However, debates continue on whether MPs should be handling these funds at all. The 2022 High Court ruling further questioned the legitimacy of MPs managing these funds, so we await the Supreme Court ruling on the NG-CDF Act this afternoon. Shouldn’t we be moving away from CDF and instead channelling those funds to systemic solutions like free education for all that would eliminate the need for temporary bursaries and provide lasting benefits for every Kenyan child?

Indiana just quietly launched a MAHA revolution. A new bill would make Indiana the second state to ban almost all medical mandates. Idaho was the first state to outlaw medical mandates in 2025. It was MAHA’s biggest win yet. And almost no one noticed. Leslie Manookian wrote Idaho’s Medical Freedom Act and got it passed. Cait Alexander Cait Alexander told MPs exactly what it feels like to survive an attack that should never have happened.
