One asterisk: in Aug 2010 an overflow bug minted ~184 billion BTC in block 74638. Satoshi shipped a fix within hours and the chain moved past it. Since then, what gets hacked is custodians, like Binance's hot wallet.

the protocol wasn't touched. a hot wallet was. that's the whole custody lesson in one week

The protocol never got hacked. The custodians did. Big difference, and this week proved it again.

$6.3B drained from Binance through one hacked engineer's laptop, and the Bitcoin network kept printing blocks like nothing happened. Exchanges get hacked. Bitcoin doesn't. Your keys, your coins 🔑

All the FUD is just to get people to sell their $BTC so 'they' can accumulate more

True crises often stem from within. Bitcoin's network security issues should be placed on the same level as quantum attacks—this is something we need to take seriously.

The distinction matters this week. Exchanges and the wallets they run can be breached, but that's a custody failure, not the protocol. Holding your own keys keeps you out of that category.

Exactly. The network wasn't breached, an exchange was. Same lesson every cycle: the weak spot is wherever someone else holds your keys. ⚓️🐶

Even though it has never been hacked people have always built a FUD around it.

However, Bitcoin's network security comes from miners, and the reason miners are motivated to work is because of the extremely high growth in Bitcoin's price (with prices doubling or more every four years during the halving). But as you and I both know, Bitcoin will inevitably reach a point where the price can no longer double after a halving, and that time is coming soon. At that point, who will provide revenue for the miners? Through token issuance? Or will God print money for the miners? Or will we let miners go through natural selection, which would lead to a sharp drop in the network's hash rate and force miners to shut down and turn to other industries? I hope this helps people realize this sooner.

Understanding the difference between protocol security and user security is essential for building real confidence in Bitcoin.
