A baby boy born in the U.S. has an astonishing risk profile. Men are 3 times more likely to die before age 25, 3 times more likely to become addicted to drugs or alcohol, and an incredible 19 times more likely to end up in jail. A man is more than twice as likely as a woman to have a car accident and 3 times more likely to be involved in 2 car accidents. Even when not driving, men are more careless; twice as many men compared with women are killed simply crossing the street. Maleness is by far the biggest risk factor for violence. Men kill men massively more often than women kill women—on average, 26 times more often. These patterns extend beyond the U.S. When data on violent crime are gathered from around the world, the result is utterly clear and amazingly consistent. Crime statistics from Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Scotland, Uganda, and the United Kingdom all exhibit the same basic pattern. In each of these societies, without a single exception, young males are by far the most likely to be the perpetrators as well as the victims of murder. From my talk at the University of Richmond

And because of this the logic some people seem to think well, we just shouldn’t enforce laws anymore. But the problem is, criminals usually victimize people around them. And the people they’re victimizing also tend to be disproportionately poor, disproportionately marginalized, disproportionately from deprived backgrounds too. Compared to Americans who earn more than $75,000 a year, the lowest-income Americans are 7 times more likely to be victims of aggravated assault, 7 times more likely to be victims of robbery, and 20 times more likely to be victims of sexual assault and homicide. Virtually every crime you can think of — the poor are the most likely to be victimized by it. And what gets lost is that poor people are much more likely to be victimized by crime than to be perpetrators of crime. But we focus so much of the attention on the perpetrators — and how they come from marginalized and deprived backgrounds — and we just don’t think nearly as much about the victims. What happens to them. What their lives look like afterward. And I think that’s a shame. I mean, if there’s a criminal who commits an act, we should spend more time thinking about how to help the victim than the perpetrator. From my conversation with Garry Tan
