In 1609, Italian mathematician and philosopher Galileo created his own telescope and began observing the heavens. His discoveries were earthshaking, and in 1610, he wrote a book, 'Sidereus Nuncius' (The Sidereal Messenger), to describe what he'd seen.

Born in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, he spent most of his life in the rural areas around Maggie Valley and Cocke County, Tennessee. Sutton wrote and self-published a book about moonshining, created a home video showcasing his methods, and appeared in several documentaries—one of which won a Regional Emmy. His life and work are also featured in the award-winning biography and photobook, The Moonshiner Popcorn Sutton. In 2009, at age 62, Sutton died by suicide through carbon monoxide poisoning to avoid serving a federal prison sentence. He had been convicted of moonshining-related crimes and illegal firearm possession. After his death, a whiskey brand and company were named in his honor.
