Mayor Zohran Mamdani might be the first mayor NYC (and in the country) that has acknowledged Nakba Day. The Nakba, which means ‘Catastrophe’ began in 1948, when more than 700,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes by Zionist militias and terror groups in order to create the state of Israel. Entire villages were destroyed, families were separated, and generations of Palestinians were turned into refugees. The Nakba is not just a historical event. It is an ongoing reality of displacement, occupation, and denial of basic human rights. To this day, Palestinians are still not allowed to return or move freely in their land. But there was a conscious decision that Israel should be allowed to do it as compensation for the holocaust, antisemitism, or as one American diplomat put it, we are allowing a small injustice in order to correct a much bigger injustice. And that’s why Israel continued to ethnic cleansing, until 1967, Israel expelled 36 villages from inside Israel. During the '67 War, it expelled 300,000 Palestinians. From 1967-today, Israel expelled more than 500,000 Palestinians from the West Bank & the Gaza Strip, and just before the 7th of October, ethnic cleansing operations were taking place in East Jerusalem, the south of Hebron & the Jordan Valley. So expelling Palestinians either in small numbers or in large numbers is part of what Israel thinks is a legitimate arsenal of maintaining the viability of a Jewish state…” - Ilan Pappe
