In 1950, the USAF tested a wingtip coupling system allowing a B-29 bomber to tow two F-84 fighters with minimal range loss, enabling long-range escort over targets. Over 15 flights and 90 couplings proved feasibility, however the program ended after a fatal crash in 1953.🫡

The Hotspur glider BT665 flew across the Irish Sea towed by a Whitley from Netheravon to Northern Ireland in 1942 trials piloted by a King's Dragoon Guards staff sergeant. The test proved long range towing with a phone link in the tow rope. Never used in combat it trained Glider Pilot Regiment pilots until most were scrapped after the war with only a few preserved. 🫡
