During a Pentagon test in August, US fighter jet pilots took direction from an AI "air battle manager" for the first time. The Air Force and Navy employed the Raft AI’s Starsage tactical control system on F-16s, F/A-18s and F-35s during a joint military exercise designed to evaluate new weapons systems, advanced communications and battle management platforms. Raft AI CEO Shubhi Mishra told Fox News that the Starsage system "both speeds up response time and improves accuracy, allowing pilots to make decisions that once took minutes in just seconds."

One of the first aircraft to use electrical flight controls with no mechanical linkages, the Balzac 001 was an experimental VTOL aircraft developed by Dassault in the early 1960s. Built as a technology demonstrator for the planned Mirage IIIV supersonic fighter, it was powered by eight Rolls-Royce RB.108 lift engines and a single Bristol Siddeley Orpheus turbojet. The aircraft achieved its first free flight in October 1962 and completed the first full transition from vertical takeoff to horizontal flight in March 1963 but was destroyed in an accident the following year.

Turkish Bayraktar TB3 UCAVs successfully flew in extreme winter conditions over the Baltic Sea during NATO’s Steadfast Dart 2026 exercise, the only aircraft able to operate in the harsh weather in the exercise. Operating from TCG ANADOLU, the TB3 took off and landed autonomously in -5°C temperatures, heavy snow, and strong winds. Other aircraft reportedly could not fly due to weather conditions.
