The Ed Sullivan show was a staple in many US households. It featured a mix of new and popular hip music along with the more established "parent's" music coming from stars like Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. One of the hip new 60s groups that made it's way onto the Sullivan stage was the Mamas and the Papas. The story goes that the band was upset about having to lip sync their performance. So in pure hippy rebel fashion Michelle Phillips decides to eat a banana during what should be her parts of the vocal harmonies to the songs they were supposed to be performing! There's still some debate on whether this was a truly rebellious gesture on the part of the band, or if the band was just having a bit of fun. Michelle Phillips debunked the story (I'll post in the comments) but still there are those who insist that it was an act of 60s Flower Children rebellion!
