🚨On This Day in Metal — Metallica at Woodstock ’94 Mud, Metal, and Madness! Thirty two years ago today, on August 13, 1994, Winston Farm in Saugerties, New York, became a mud caked battlefield as an estimated 350,000 people gathered for Woodstock ’94. The rain had turned the festival grounds into a giant swamp, but when Metallica took the stage Saturday night, the skies cleared and the band delivered an unforgettable performance. James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Jason Newsted looked out at a sea of mud covered fans and delivered a masterclass in heavy metal. Woodstock ’94 captured Metallica at a pivotal moment, still carrying the raw power of their classic era before the major stylistic and visual changes of the Load era. Were you there in the mud for Metallica at Woodstock ’94? What do you remember most about this legendary performance? #ThisDayInMetal #Metallica #Woodstock94 #MetalHistory

On This Day in Metal August 12, 1983 Metallica played The Metro in Chicago on the Kill ’Em All for One Tour, opening for Raven. Four young men were taking the stage and showcasing their groundbreaking debut album Kill ’Em All: James Hetfield had just turned 20, Lars Ulrich was 19, Kirk Hammett was 20, and Cliff Burton was 21. Metal history was being made before the world fully realized what was coming. #ThisDayInMetal #Metallica #Raven #KillEmAll

Metallica switching it up with a unique performance of “Am I Evil?” with all of the members playing a different instrument. With Hetfield on drums, Lars on vocals, Kirk on bass, and Jason on guitar, this performance shows off the versatility each of these musicians possess. This song is a cover, originally written by the band Diamond Head. Diamond Head was a British heavy metal band that was a big influence on Metallica, who recorded this song in 1984. Anger and paranoia are common themes for both Metallica and Diamond Head, and this song has plenty of both: it’s about a guy who seeks revenge and wonders if he is evil after his mother is burned for witchcraft. While Metallica got all the fame from covering this song when they released it as a B-Side to their “Creeping Death” single (and later on their Garage, Inc. album), Diamond Head has stated that they’re flattered by the cover and the money they’ve earned from royalties paid by Metallica has played a role in keeping the band going. The intro is based on a piece by British composer Gustav Holst called “The Planets.” The piece has seven movements, each named for a planet, and the intro to “Am I Evil?” comes from the “Mars,” which is the first movement. #Metallica

James Hetfield reflects on Jason Newsted’s time in Metallica, admitting the band didn’t treat their bassist the way he deserved. After joining in 1986, months after Cliff Burton’s tragic death, Newsted faced years of tension, isolation, and pressure from his bandmates. Hetfield tells and remembers what actually happened back then.

One of the funniest and most endearing stories involving Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead) and Metallica took place backstage at the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tennessee, on September 14, 2009, during Metallica’s World Magnetic Tour. Metallica was in the middle of a relaxed jam session in the dressing room. James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo, Lars Ulrich, and a few other friends (including Matt Sorum of Guns N’ Roses) were playing some casual jams. Suddenly, Lemmy walked into the room. Robert Trujillo began clapping excitedly, and Lemmy, in his characteristic raspy voice, James Hetfield greeted him with a respectful smile: “Hello, sir.” Lemmy sat down, tuned his bass, and, without further ado, the entire group launched into two Motörhead classics from 1979: first “Damage Case” and then “Too Late Too Late.” Lemmy and Hetfield took turns on vocals, with Lemmy on bass and singing with all his raw energy, while Metallica backed him up with groove and enthusiasm. At the end of the second song, James Hetfield joked, “Are we hired?” Lemmy replied with a laugh, “Yeah, I guess so… but you’ve got to get rid of that drummer.” Lars Ulrich, keeping his sense of humor, answered instantly, “I’ve been trying to get out of here for 25 years!” Everyone burst out laughing. That casual backstage moment was captured on video and shows the genuine chemistry between them: Metallica always viewed Lemmy as an idol and mentor. Lars Ulrich has often recounted that as a teenager he was president of the Motörhead fan club on the West Coast (along with Cliff Burton) and that he tried to keep up with Lemmy’s drinking pace… only to end up throwing up. That mutual admiration led to several on-stage collaborations, but the 2009 backstage jam is particularly warm and spontaneous. It was a meeting of legends that epitomized the respect and friendship between Motörhead’s wildest rock and Metallica’s thrash. A slice of pure, unfiltered heavy metal history.

"Hey Ya!" was written, produced and recorded practically alone by André 3000. He played acoustic guitar, keyboards, programmed the drums and did all the vocals (he just didn't play the bass). The video was inspired by the Beatles' historic performance on the 1964 Ed Sullivan Show.

The Faces performing 'I'd Rather Go Blind' live in 1974. The guitar was played by Keith Richards, Rod Stewart on vocals, Kenny Jones on drums, Ian Mclagan on keyboard, and Tetsu Yamauchi on bass. That looks like a fine stage!

James Hetfield initially considered “Nothing Else Matters” too personal to become a Metallica song. Written while he was away from his girlfriend, it eventually developed into one of the band’s most famous ballads. The track appeared on 1991’s self-titled Metallica, produced by Bob Rock with Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, and reached No. 6 in the UK. Live at Shoreline Amphitheatre in 1997, its quieter opening provided a striking contrast to Metallica’s heavier material.

Cliff Burton had already written the bass intro to “For Whom the Bell Tolls” before joining Metallica. He had performed an early version of the riff with his pre-Metallica band, Agents of Misfortune, at a Battle of the Bands in 1981. When Burton brought the idea to Metallica, James Hetfield added the heavy guitar accents, helping turn Burton's unusual bass line into one of the band's most recognisable openings. Recorded for Metallica's 1984 album Ride the Lightning, the song was inspired by Ernest Hemingway's novel of the same name. And the “bell” heard at the beginning isn't actually a traditional bell: at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, drummer Lars Ulrich struck a huge cast-iron anvil with a metal hammer to create the sound. The recording was combined with a bell sound from a sound-effects reel, giving the intro its distinctive metallic character. The album credits list Ulrich as playing “drums, anvil.”

On This Day in Metal June 6th, 2004 Metallica delivered one of the most memorable festival performances in metal history at the Download Festival in Donington, England. Just hours before the show, drummer Lars Ulrich was hospitalized due to a medical emergency and unable to perform. Rather than cancel the headline set, the metal community rallied together. Dave Lombardo stepped in for “Battery” and “The Four Horsemen,” while Joey Jordison handled most of the remaining set, with drum technician Flemming Larsen also helping out. The result was a legendary performance that fans still talk about today. Watch Metallica perform “Battery” with Dave Lombardo on drums below: #ThisDayInMetal #Metallica #DownloadFestival #DaveLombardo

🚨 METALLICA just dropped a history bomb in Athens 🔥 Kirk Hammett on stage last night in front of ~80k fans : “Every time I pick up my guitar I’m playing scales named by your ancestors… Music theory was created right here in Athens by Pythagoras. Every time I play, I’m playing GREEK CULTURE with my scales. I salute you for inventing the music we’re playing right now!”❤️ Ancient Greece didn’t just give us philosophy and democracy — they gave us the DNA of metal itself. Tell me again how modern Greeks have “nothing to do” with the ancients? 😂 Metallica spells the truth. #MetallicaInAthens #GreekMetal #AncientGreeceLives #PythagorasWouldBeProud #Metallica They had another surprise for the Greek fans when they played Zorba the Greek 🎶 🎸 ⬇️

"Hey Ya!" was written, produced and recorded almost entirely by André 3000. He played acoustic guitar, keyboards, programmed the drums and did all the vocals (the only thing he didn't record was the bass, played by Aaron Mills). The track, featured on the album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2003), became one of the biggest hits of his career. The video was directly inspired by the Beatles' historic performance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. The success was so great that "Hey Ya!" spent 9 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance.
