In a 1999 interview with Larry King on CNN, Prince explained why he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol instead of picking a new name, as he broke free from his Warner Bros. contract and became "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince."

@CNN Yes, I'm gonna be that guy... He didn't become "TAFKAP", this was dubbed by the Media and he wasn't fond of it because it still used his former name. His name had no pronunciation.
