In a brave and compelling interview, Dame Esther Rantzen has told @susannareid100 how she has personally witnessed pet dogs being allowed kinder deaths than people dying in Britain. The broadcaster, who has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, is campaigning for the law to be changed.

@susannareid100 Dogs experience these "kindly" deaths when their owners decide the vet bill are too high. It will be the same with the old and the vulnerable. Society will "kindly - as woody allen put it - drastically reduce their expenses.

@susannareid100 I was a nurse for many years and seen some horrific and painful deaths and it broke my heart. So I for one are all for assisted dying

Its one of the hardest messages to try and get across to people, how you feel after a diagnosis. How you don't want to be a burden for others. Medications playing tricks on your mind and so on. Most in society will probably support assisted dying I suspect, but important to remember, most in society won't become ill or be in that situation. It's vital there is alot of open honest debate on this issue in my view.

@susannareid100 Let her suffer. Like how she let those poor children suffer when she turned a blind eye to Jimmy Savile.

@susannareid100 I'm sorry Esther Rantzen has backed this euthanasia campaign. Its dangerous and the fact is that doctors have no right to decide when we die. The sneaky switch-off is far too prevalent already. @ERantzen

@susannareid100 I have had to watch my dad the last 5 years change so much and watch him suffer and in the last month watch him not be able to eat and see how much he suffered last week until he passed away on Friday. Nobody should have to live like that it was absolutely heartbreaking to watch.

@susannareid100 My Dad had MND, the last few days were heartbreaking. He called out help, help! I ran to phone to call the Hospice so a nurse could administer an injection to calm him. Even though he had that, he was still in those moments waiting to leave this lifetime. Just terrible for him

@susannareid100 A difficult debate. I am dying. Not yet in a lot of pain, but what happens when it gets to that? Doped up with meds so I am no longer able to eat or drink, soiling myself, unable to communicate effectively. I am a nurse and have cared for many terminal patients. I dont want this.
