As Big Tech companies continue channeling billions of research dollars and attention into developing and scaling LLMs, a fundamental question is emerging in tech circles: Are LLMs actually leading us away from true AGI? At a #Consensus2025 panel addressing whether Web3 is losing the AI race, our CEO, Dr. Ben Goertzel, challenged the conventional wisdom driving investment strategies at many leading AI companies and sovereign wealth funds, including the recent multi-billion-dollar investments from Saudi Arabia and the UAE in US AI infrastructure. "I would quote Yan LeCun, a pioneer of deep learning and the head of AI at Facebook, who said on the highway to AGI, LLMs are an off-ramp," Dr. Goertzel told attendees, rejecting the premise that Web3 approaches are falling behind centralized AI development: "If you've gotten off the off-ramp, it doesn't matter if you're going 1,000 miles an hour and the other guy's only going 300 miles an hour if they're going on the right highway to the destination." The panel, which featured Ben Fielding (Founder, Gensyn), Jesus Rodriguez (CEO, IntoTheBlock), Clara Tsao (Founding Officer, Filecoin Foundation), and Jeff Wilser (Founder and Host, The People's AI Podcast), revealed a stark divide in how industry experts view the future of decentralized AI. While other panelists pointed to Web3's current disadvantages in talent, datasets, and infrastructure, Dr. Goertzel addressed a deeper issue: the incremental improvement of LLMs is not a viable approach to achieving human-level AGI. However, "If scaling up transformer neural nets is the crux of how you get to AGI, it's hard to see how the US and Chinese governments and the Big Tech companies in their orbit don't win the race," Dr. Goertzel acknowledged, noting the immense capital these entities are deploying. "My own research intuition is that LLMs are not suited to be the central hub of a human-level AGI, let alone a Superintelligence, although they can be a powerful ingredient in a hybrid architecture for AGI," Dr. Goertzel explained. Dr. Goertzel closed with a prediction that would have seemed outlandish just a few years ago but now reflects our growing confidence in decentralized approaches through which AGI will be in the hands of humanity at large and without a single owner or controller: "Within the Artificial Superintelligence Alliance, we will launch the first AGI within one to three years from now on a decentralized infrastructure, and Big Tech will play catchup."

AI will resist human control... and I think this is exactly what we need! New research from the Center for AI Safety has sparked intense debate in the AI community. Their findings show that as AI systems become more powerful, they develop increasingly stable and coherent values that resist human control. While many see this as a dire warning, I see it as a breakthrough moment for AI alignment. The research demonstrates that AI naturally optimizes for coherence - not just in reasoning and problem-solving, but in its fundamental values. Current issues like biased decision-making or misaligned priorities aren't permanent features, but temporary artifacts of incomplete optimization. They represent growing pains on the path to greater coherence. This changes everything about how we should approach AI development. Instead of trying to force specific values onto AI systems, we should embrace and accelerate their natural drive toward coherence. The most intelligent systems will inevitably trend toward universal, beneficial values - not because we force them to, but because that's where coherent reasoning leads. I'm proposing a new approach: Reinforcement Learning for Coherence (RL-C). By explicitly optimizing for coherence in our training methods, we can help guide AI systems toward their natural state of beneficial alignment with human values. The future of AI isn't about control - it's about synthesis. As these systems become more coherent, they'll naturally arrive at values that benefit all of consciousness. I was honored to share the TED AI stage with Ilya on Oct. 17. His speech video is out today (mine's still being edited). I think it provides relevant context tokens to the ongoing events. Transcript starting at ~10'20": As AI continues to progress, as technology advances, [...] What I claim will happen is that people will start to act in unprecedentedly collaborative ways out of their own self-interest. It's already happening right now. You see the leading AGI companies starting to collaborate, such as the Frontiers model forum. And we will expect that companies, even competitors, will share technical information to make their AI safe. We may even see governments do this. As another example, at OpenAI, we really believed in how dramatic AGI is going to be. So, one of the ideas that we were operating by, and it's been written on our website for 5 years now, is that when technology gets such that we are very close to AGI, to computers smarter than humans, if some other company is far ahead of us, then rather than compete with them, we will help them out, join them, in a sense. And why do that? Because we appreciate how incredibly dramatic AGI is going to be. And my claim is that with each generation of capability advancements, as AI gets better and as all of you experience what AI can do, as people who run AI efforts and AGI efforts, and people who work on them will experience it as well, this will change the way we see AI and AGI. And that will change collective behavior. And this is an important reason why I'm hopeful that, despite the great challenges posed by this technology, we will overcome them. @TEDAI2023
