Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark on the most consequential AI milestone we're racing toward by 2028: Clark is asked about the future of AI development. He responds with a specific forecast: "My prediction is by the end of 2028, it's more likely than not that we have an AI system where you would be able to say to it, make a better version of yourself. And it just goes off and does that completely autonomously." He explains the reasoning behind this prediction: "The reason for that prediction is looking carefully at many public sources of information about AI development and seeing that we've gone from just AI systems that can do basic coding to AI systems that are now involved in the production of science itself." Clark notes it's not just the high-profile scientific work that's changing, but the underlying labor too: "And also the unglamorous but fundamental engineering work involved in doing any form of like large scale R&D project." Transcript starting at ~10'20": As AI continues to progress, as technology advances, [...] What I claim will happen is that people will start to act in unprecedentedly collaborative ways out of their own self-interest. It's already happening right now. You see the leading AGI companies starting to collaborate, such as the Frontiers model forum. And we will expect that companies, even competitors, will share technical information to make their AI safe. We may even see governments do this. As another example, at OpenAI, we really believed in how dramatic AGI is going to be. So, one of the ideas that we were operating by, and it's been written on our website for 5 years now, is that when technology gets such that we are very close to AGI, to computers smarter than humans, if some other company is far ahead of us, then rather than compete with them, we will help them out, join them, in a sense. And why do that? Because we appreciate how incredibly dramatic AGI is going to be. And my claim is that with each generation of capability advancements, as AI gets better and as all of you experience what AI can do, as people who run AI efforts and AGI efforts, and people who work on them will experience it as well, this will change the way we see AI and AGI. The 18th Annual AGI Conference (AGI-25) took place last month at Reykjavik University in Iceland, bringing together participants from over 80 countries to explore pioneering research on the path to AGI. AGI-25 programming featured distinguished keynote presentations from leaders in academia and industry, including Ben Goertzel, Richard Sutton, Tatiana Shavrina, Michael Levin, Anna Ciaunica PhD @annaciaunica.bsky.social, and Joscha Bach. These talks addressed core challenges in AGI theory and implementation, the limitations of current state-of-the-art learning systems, and new frameworks for integrating reasoning, embodiment, and autonomy. The accepted papers covered a broad range of research areas, including novel learning algorithms, reasoning systems, theoretical neurobiology and bio-inspired systems, quantum computing, theories of machine consciousness, ethics, safety, formal mathematical foundations, and philosophy of AGI. “Today’s LLMs are the ‘Mainframe Computers’ of our generation” I was on Bloomberg TV today discussing Sakana AI, and to share my view that today’s LLMs are our generation’s “Mainframe Computers”. We are still in the very early stages of AI, and it is inevitable, due to market competition and global innovation (especially from those innovating with resource constraints), that this technology will become a million times more efficient. There is a narrative established in Silicon Valley that AI is a “Winner Takes All” technology, and that scaling up existing models and consuming ever greater resources will require (and even justify) the largest investments of our generation, in order to “win” the AI race. In contrast, I believe that AI is not a “winner takes all” technology. LLMs will be commoditized, become vastly more efficient, and made widely available in all countries. Ultimately, there will be thousands, if not millions, of AI models used by everyone. Just like with the evolution of early clunky mainframe computers to modern computing, how we use AI today will look very different in a few years (or even a year from now), compared to today’s ‘clunky’ LLMs.
