We don’t need to. 2 super carrier battle groups could grind the entire nation to a halt. They import some ~80% of agricultural inputs and energy. They have the greatest weakness of any nation on this planet.

In WWII we had the industry, knowledge, & manpower to fairly quickly retool from making vehicles for market to vehicles for war at a faster rate than they were destroyed. At least two of those three advantages don't exist now.

This isn’t fixable until 2027, and only if DoD/Congress ditch Huntington, which they won’t: $50B order backlog representing 70% of DoD (primarily USN) shipbuilding spend. Concentration risk to the max. Totally preventable, but… you know.

From the video: "This shipbuilding momentum continued long after the war. In 1975 [the US] was the world's biggest shipbuilder." Perhaps if naval shipbuilding is included. But commercial? Not even close.

The SNP gave away a £150 million contract for 7 small ferries to Remontowa in Poland last year, and is now stalling on directly awarding a 4 vessel contract to Ferguson Marine first announced four months ago, putting hundreds of shipbuilding jobs at risk as the shipyard runs out of work soon. For a nationalist party, they have a poor understanding of the national interest.

"CHINA'S NAVY IS EXPANDING AT BREAKNECK SPEED" The U.S. Navy is still considered the most powerful in the world when it comes to firepower and tonnage, but the number of Navy ships has fallen behind China’s. The United States has 296 ships in its fleet, while China’s is on pace to surpass 400 ships this year. Despite the U.S. Navy’s goal of increasing the size of its fleet, in recent years the number of ships has been shrinking....... China’s largest state-owned shipyard, the China State Shipbuilding Corporation, built more commercial vessels by tonnage in 2024 than the entire US shipbuilding industry had since World War II. This reflects the declining shipbuilding capability of the US, which currently has only four active public shipyards compared to China’s 35 sites. The U.S. is increasingly relying on its key Asian allies, South Korea and Japan, to help revitalize its struggling shipbuilding and repair capabilities, leveraging their advanced maritime industries to counter China's dominance.
