This might be the best explanation I heard for "why Oct 7" and, surprisingly, it comes from Ami Ayalon, former head of the Shin Bet, Israel's secret service, and commander-in-chief of the Navy. Here what he says (this is the first video, there are a couple more below which you'll really want to watch): He says the "most important cause [of Oct 7]" was "the political paradigm", whereby Israel's policy was "divide and rule", meaning Israel "had to make sure Palestinians would not have a unified leadership" and could therefore always say "nobody to talk with, nothing to talk about". Concretely "in order to do it [Israel] had to make sure Hamas would go on controlling Gaza and the Palestinian authority the West bank", and incite them to "fight each other". This is why Israel "enhanced and assisted Hamas, transferred money, etc." As a result of all this Hamas "got the Palestinians' support" because "they became the only administration who fought against the Israeli occupation and for the purpose of Palestinian freedom" while Fatah and the Palestinian authority became perceived as "Israeli collaborators". In his assessment "between 70 to 80% of the Palestinians are supporting Hamas, only because Hamas is perceived as the one who fight for [their] freedom." He says Israel completely misunderstood the situation before Oct 7 because it measures "hardware" whilst Hamas measures "software", meaning that after every fight between Israel and the Palestinians, success for Israel is measured in "losses in human life, in military installations, in military infrastructure" whereas what Hamas measures is "the support of the people." As an illustration he says that in May 2021 - when there was fighting during 2 weeks and around 300 Palestinians were killed (to 17 on the Israeli side) - Israel thought that Hamas "suffered a huge loss and a huge military defeat" but from Hamas's standpoint it was "a huge victory" because this led to Hamas, for the first time, getting "more than 50% of the support from the Palestinian people."

Thousands of women, children, and men, of all ages, in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza, came out today in anti-Hamas, pro-peace, anti-war protests in which they condemned the terror organization, called for its departure from Gaza and power, expressed pro-peace sentiments and made it clear that they value dignity and life more than martyrdom and death cultism. 18 years ago today, Hamas staged a military coup and violently took over Gaza. But to understand how it got to that point, we need to go back a little bit. Gaza was a part of the Ottoman Empire for centuries, and later, the British mandate, and in 1948, was under Egyptian control. In 1967, in the defensive Six-Day War, Israel seized over the Gaza Strip intending to hand it over in future peace negotiations. In 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza and handed control over to the Palestinian people. While the move wasn't part of a formal peace agreement, it reflected the broader Land for Peace thinking. Israel gives land in exchange for peaceful living with its neighbors. This worked relatively well with Egypt in the Sinai Peninsula and with Jordan. Many Israelis, me included, hoped that Gaza would become a model for Palestinian self-rule and a step towards a peaceful Middle East. Then in 2006, came the Palestinian legislative elections. I remember the warnings very clearly. The United States, European leaders, Israel, even the United Nations, everyone cautioned the Palestinians against allowing Hamas, a jihadi terrorist organization which aims to enact an Islamist caliphate to run for elections. We all knew what Hamas was. Their founding charter openly calls for the destruction of Israel and for the murder of Jews. Now, allowing Hamas to participate in the Palestinian elections is like letting the KKK or a neo-Nazi group to appear on the ballot and pretend that they're just another political party. They're not. But they ran anyway and they won, narrowly, 74 out of 132 seats. Most Palestinians weren't voting for terror. They were voting actually against the corruption and dysfunction of the Palestinian Authority, but Hamas saw the outcome very differently. Ismail Haniyeh was appointed prime minister and a unity government was supposed to be formed, but Hamas had no intention of governing responsibly or sharing power. Hamas refused to recognize Israel, stop its violence, or accept previous agreements, and in response, the international community cut off their fundings. Tensions quickly escalated between Hamas and Fatah, which was the political party that controlled most of the Palestinian Authority's governing institutions and security forces, and on June 10th, 2007, gun battles broke out across Gaza. Hamas turned its weapons against their own people and launched a bloody coup against the Palestinian Authority security forces. Political opponents were dragged through the streets, thrown from rooftops, and executed, obviously without trial. That's when Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, got his nickname, the Butcher of Khan Yunis. Four days later, on June 14th, Hamas took full control of Gaza and began imposing their version of Sharia law. Hamas destroyed Gaza. They received billions of dollars in international aid over the years, but instead of investing in hospitals, schools, jobs, they used that money to create the most fortified piece of land on Earth, build an elaborated terror tunnel system, and stock up on ammunitions, rockets, and bombs. Since taking power, they've held the people of Gaza hostage while launching endless attacks on Israeli civilians. It didn't have to be this way. Gaza could've become the next Singapore or Dubai. It's a beautiful coastal city with so much potential, but Hamas chose jihadism over jobs and terror over technology. And on October 7th, 2023, Hamas showed the entire world what it had been working on, and it was not a Palestinian state. The suffering in Gaza is not the result of Israel. It is the result of Hamas. The Palestinian people never asked for this. They didn't vote for a dictatorship. Hamas took over Gaza by force and they've ruled it with fear ever since. So if you care about Palestinians, if you care about peace, you should be calling to free Palestine, but not from Israel. You should be calling to free Palestine from Hamas.

I was looking for THESE authentic people - the real voices. And I think I found a few. So first of all, what do I think there is NOT happening in Gaza? There is no genocide and no famine. Yes, there is quite a lot of suffering, shortages in some places and lack of decent shelter etc. And there’s a lot of cynical exploitation of it for propaganda purposes. I’m saying it because you can see children are getting payed for it, you can see the absolute control of distribution and you can see how basic needs and the way out is blocked with money- Israel is not taking money for any of it, the West is sending free aid, so the money is demanded by those who want to control the suffering and use it. You should know, that before the war - there was already quite a lot of very poor population in Gaza, but now the economic difficulty has greatly increased for two main reasons: one, the war damaged many sources of livelihood and the second - a major source of livelihood was working in Israel and this option was closed for a long time now, since October 7, and is now much less operational. So in fact the main source of income is donations and funding from Hamas for control purposes of course. This is how, among other things, Hamas uses the population to "work for them", and also to smile or cry for the cameras on demand. Now on the issue of claimed famine- famine is when there’s NO food and water, enough for the population. As I said, my personal conclusion is that there is no shortage of food and water in Gaza at all. The problem is that the food is not distributed equally, it is controlled by those who are powerful (usually Hamas operatives) and then sold at high costs to the population without them having sources of livelihood. Food that should be distributed for #free is actually sold at a high price, the shelter tents are also paid for and the exit from Gaza is particularly expensive (5000$ that are paid to the transporters). There are quite a few who refer to Gaza as a "prison" but Gaza is not a prison, Hamas has simply created a situation where it is very expensive to leave it - and thus the poor and the new poor are completely dependent on Hamas and other clans (Hamulas) in everything to do with food, shelter and exit, and they play with them as pawns. If the international community is really sincere about disarming Hamas and granting Gaza a new future, then they have to stop treating Hamas as a political entity and understand that it is a terrorist militia. The only way to make a terrorist group disarm is through military power. The only party that can effectively use military power to disarm Hamas is Israel... Yes, Israel, which you have tied its hands in the hope that terrorists will comply with diplomacy! It is amazing that some people still believe Hamas when they say they will dissolve and leave the government in Gaza! Hamas has already lost the government in Gaza since October 7. He had a construction company they built homes in Israel and because of October 7 they have no jobs anymore. NEW Queen Rania of Jordan continues to speak out on Israel and Gaza. In her second interview on CNN since October 7, Queen Rania is even more critical of the Israeli government and anyone who pushes back against a cease fire. Summary of interview: There has to be a collective call for a cease fire. I know there are people who say that calling for a cease fire is helping Hamas, but in that call they are justifying and endorsing the death of thousands of civilians. That is morally reprehensible. It is also short sighted. If you eliminate all of Hamas, what next? The root cause of this conflict is an illegal occupation, routine human rights abuses, illegal settlements, disregard to UN resolutions, and international law. If we do not address these root causes, you can kill the combatant, but you can’t kill the cause. Another group will rise. Another group more determined than Hamas. Israel needs to realize, if it wants its security, the surest route is through peace. Not the strongest military, or the most capable intelligence services, or the iron dome. If we want to make sure that we are never in this situation agin, we have to ask ourselves how we got there. After the Oslo Accords, in 1996 a poll was taken that 80 percent of Palestinians supported the accords and support for violent resistance dropped to 20 percent. If Palestinians had a political horizon, they themselves would be against any form of violence. But they need to be given that prospect. I cannot begin to describe the scale and scope of the catastrophic humanitarian crisis. There’s an acronym in Gaza, WCNSF - wounded child with no surviving family, that is an acronym that should never exist. I think the world is screaming, how many people have to die for our global conscience to awake. Or is it forever dormant when it comes to the Palestinians? After 10,000 people have been killed, for the Israelis to claim they are protecting human life is an insult to our intelligence. There is no safe place in Gaza. Even the so-called safe zones are being hit. I do not believe these evacuation orders are for the benefit of Gaza civilians. They are not the target audience, the rest of the world is. Israel is trying to legitimize its actions. Of course the use of human shields is criminal. But even if one side puts human beings in harms way, that civilian is still protected under international law. I find it really outrageous when Israeli officials audaciously dismiss Palestinian casualties as “human shields.” In the most crowded areas of Gaza, a civilian death is a foregone conclusion and that makes it a war crime. On antisemitism and Islamophobia: I absolutely and wholeheartedly condemn antisemitism and Islamophobia, it’s never ok and never justified to attack someone based on their political beliefs. I also want to remind everyone that Israel does not represent all the Jewish people in the world. Israel is a state and it alone is responsible for its own crimes. Jewish people around the world are appalled by what they’re seeing. Muslims have to be the first to condemn antisemitism. This is not about religion, this is about politics. Antisemitism is being weaponized to shut down criticism of Israel. Let me be very clear, being pro-Palestinian is not being antisemitic.
