In a press conference hours after the blast, Dr Abu-Sittah predicted further Israeli attacks on hospitals would follow. In the past year, Israel has attacked all aspects of Gaza’s healthcare system: Ghassan thus refers to the blast as the moment ‘it stopped being a war and it became a genocide’.

A year ago today, doctors stood among the bodies of victims of the Al-Ahli blast, warning that if Israeli impunity continued, more attacks on Gaza’s hospitals would follow. Among them was surgeon Dr Ghassan Abu-Sittah, a firsthand witness to the blast, whose testimony was overlooked. We’ve recorded it here:

Dr Abu-Sittah's expert testimony on the nature of the injuries he treated that night offers clues about the type of weapon used in the attack. His analysis of the wounds suggested that a ‘fragmentation bomb’ rather than a simple explosive was likely the cause of the blast.

Israel accused Palestinian fighters, but we + others showed that the rocket Israel blamed for the blast was in fact shot down by their interceptors well outside Gaza. Our findings prove Israel deliberately misled the public:

The 17 Oct explosion was not the first at al-Ahli. An artillery shell hit al-Ahli's cancer treatment ward on 14 Oct, and FA verified a 16 Oct strike just outside the compound, which was interpreted by doctors at al-Ahli as a warning:
