In August 2021, Osterholm sent a group text (explicitly to avoid FOIA issues) about how cloth masks don't work to Fauci, Walensky, and others. Here's the question to Psaki about Osterholm's prior comments that prompted this text. It was related to a DeSantis EO banning mask mandates for school...

And wasn't it Osterholm and other members of CIDRAP who were an early source of pushback against COVID nonsense until one day everyone but him went radio dark and he was suddenly singing a different tune?

I had to track down what made him fire off that lengthy text. Psaki totally threw him under the bus, saying he was just one expert and good for him, but that the federal government experts knew better. LOL

If I recall, Osterholm wanted a shift from cloth masks to mandatory n95s for all. He was a big part of the whole problem.

Profilbild von Kelley K

I don't recall if Osterholm wanted an actual N95 mandate, but he was definitely pushing N95 masks. Meanwhile, CDC and the Biden admin kept insisting, without evidence, that forcing kids to wear cloth masks was a critical public health measure.

Osterholm was pretty clear on his own podcast that cloth masks were useless… Avoiding FOIA was for recipient’s benefit presumably. Although devious and wrong.

Profilbild von Kelley K
Kelley Kvor 2 Monaten

Yes, and that's what Psaki was being asked about. Because we certainly weren't mandating N95s for school children. The CDC and govt experts were still pretending like cloth masks were very important for school children to be wearing all day, every day in class.

the type of harm people like Fauci, Biden and @jrpsaki did during that time is unimaginable. Don't know if we will ever get justice for what they did to our country.

I share this often: cloth masks given to employers by the state of Ohio. I received two boxes of these useless things. An early red flag that we were not dealing with serious people

I’m just curious was there ever and official change in stance like she says here by the dept of education or others that masks were no longer needed or did it all just quietly go away because of leader like RDS who were doing the right things?

Profilbild von Kelley K

The CDC did eventually drop recommendations for school masking, but based it on the end of the PH emergency iirc, as opposed to a recognition that it was ineffective, and they pivoted to "high-quality" masks for anyone (including school children) who want to stay "protected."

Profilbild von Rusty Kuhl

And that’s why you should never consent to new things “for a short period of time” or “for an emergency”…there was never a plan to end it or stop what they were doing.

He says they offer limited benefit, not that they don’t work at all. I read his text to say a cloth mask is better than nothing but that N95 masks are what should be recommended because they offer significantly greater protection.

Profilbild von Kelley K
Kelley Kvor 2 Monaten

Osterholm said cloth masks offer "very limited protection," meanwhile the CDC was recommending mask mandates in schools across the country, which were overwhelmingly cloth masks. CDC kept pretending that all those Paw Patrol and Old Navy masks were critical for public health.

A case study from 2025 on Fauci's chosen method of prevarication. Scene: A appearance by Anthony Fauci at the New Orleans book festival, where he explains why "masks worked". In this clip, he starts by declaring: "masks worked". Applause follows. We should ask how applause is appropriate. Whether masks work is a scientific problem. It is not a moral or political position. Should a scientist be applauded for giving his or her scientific opinion? If they are, then it's not being treated as a scientific opinion anymore. The applause shows just how ideological the whole discussion on masking became--and remains. But what follows is remarkable. The interviewer pushes back and questions whether masks really worked, whether scientific evidence really supports that position. Fauci yields and pivots: "there's the rub, Walter, a proper mask, an N95 or KN95." In other words, the implication is that the cloth and surgical masks that he recommended during the pandemic didn't work, but N95s do. Which somehow still allows Fauci to say, "masks worked". Isn't this remarkable? Fauci started with "masks worked", i.e. the masks that were widely recommended and worn. And for this he was applauded. But now, without conceding the mistake of surgical and cloth recommendations, he maintains that "masks worked" but only "N95s or KN95s". It gets richer. Then Fauci digs in deeper: N95s and KN95s work, yes. But, but, but! Only if the N95 and KN95 is "properly worn, all the time". That is, the mask has to be properly fitted (and that requires professional assistance) with a proper seal, and worn all the time. Ergo, "masks worked". We've gone from cloth and surgical mask recommendations to properly fitted N95 and KN95 masks worn all the time. This is why "masks worked". Then Fauci digs in even deeper: but you cannot take the mask off to eat! People complain that they took the mask off to eat and got COVID. You can't do normal things and say masks don't work! The only way masks work if you live entirely abnormal lives. Therefore, according to Fauci, "masks worked". Here's the thing: Fauci has just enumerated all of the arguments against masks working in the real world, all the while affirming that "masks worked". He gets his cake and eats it too: On the one hand, clinical studies show that not only do surgical and cloth masks not work for respiratory pathogens in a variety of environments, N95s haven't been shown to work to reduce the risk of infection by a respiratory pathogen when worn over the course of the day in normal working conditions either. (This is probably, as other studies show, because the seal breaks within just a few hours--something Fauci alludes to--and because people take the mask off.) On the other hand, if you mask harder, if you do it absolutely perfectly, then they DO work. Ergo, "masks worked". Does anyone else see how twisted this logic is? I mean, masks don't work under most or all real-world conditions. BUT, they do in theory. Therefore "masks worked", and therefore (by implication) surgical and cloth mask mandates were not pseudoscientific or a mistake. And for that performance Anthony Fauci is applauded and lionized, and he goes on and on. And nobody in the tribe pushes back on the ridiculousness of it. They just turn off their brains. And clap. It boggles the mind.

Joe Rogan just went off on Anthony Fauci with lead actor from Shawshank Redemption Tim Robbins for mandating masks and lockdowns during the 2020 pandemic which caused severe developmental damage to children: ROGAN: “Children weren’t even susceptible to the virus. Why are they in lockdown wearing a mask? What are we really doing here?” ROBBINS: “Science became a religion.” ROGAN: “Fauci said that when you are criticizing Anthony Fauci you are criticizing science. That’s such a wild thing to say.” ROBBINS: “If you questioned the religion, you got kicked out of the cult.” ROGAN: “Science is supposed to evolve from hypothesis to hypothesis based on new data. Science isn’t supposed to be a brick that you aren’t allowed to question.” ROBBINS: “I don’t believe in experts anymore. If you consider yourself an expert that means you’re done learning. I can’t trust people who have stopped challenging themselves.” ROGAN: “Real experts from MIT and Harvard were getting deplatformed for saying that the lockdown was bad for children.” ROBBINS: “Those kids had two years of socialization robbed from them.” ROGAN: “Imagine if that was your senior year of high school.” ROBBINS: “Kids stopped making eye contact with each other when the lockdowns ended. They were completely desocialized. All they would do is look at the floor.” ROGAN: “It’s so critical for toddlers to develop by reading people’s faces. Imagine being a toddler and seeing everyone with a mask on. Everyone is robbing a bank now? This is nuts.”
