On June 21, 2026, a joint committee formed by both countries concluded talks on reopening the Niger-Benin land border, which was closed by Niger in 2023 over security concerns. The Nigerien delegation’s terms for this reopening were simple: Benin must now choose between its continued subservience to France, and its relationship with the AES. President Wadagni took office on May 24, 2026, taking over from former Benin President and full-throated ally of France, Patrice Talon. What this Wadagni’s recent moves mean for the status quo maintained by his predecessor remains to be seen. For now, Benin remains friendly with France.
