In high school, I didn't realize we could actually use difference of two squares to help us with mental math. Here's how we can apply this.

(a) 43 x 37 =(40+3) x(40-3)=1600 - 9 = 1591 (b) 81 x 79=(80 + 1)x(80-1)=6400 - 1 =6399 (c) 56 x 64 =(60 - 4) x (60+4)=3600 - 16 = 3584

I am semester away from becoming an old school math teacher, i.e., no phones, no calculators, lots of paper, pencils and creative thought. The shortest point between 2 points: a straight line. Engineers perspective, measure twice/three times, cut once. Many ways to the answer.

Nice method，but this is normal in chinese maths education，we will teach them in 7 grade in middle school，and this equation is called difference of squares formula. So when will you teach students about this method?
