Stephen Kotkin offers up NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani as an example: “So there's this young kid who's really adept at social media who just looks like he won the primary for a Democratic candidate for mayor in New York City. And one of the things he wants to do is freeze rents because he wants more affordable housing. So he's a complete idiot in terms of facts. The way to get more affordable housing is to build more housing. If supply massively increases and it exceeds demand, the price has to go down. It's proven again and again and again. And what rent control does or freezing of rent, it inhibits the building of new housing. Because who's going to build new housing when you can't make money off of it? Rent control is what produces the lack of affordable housing in the first place. So he sees what's the problem as the solution now. Now, is he a fool? No, he's a really bright guy. He's very well educated.”

Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic front-runner in New York City’s mayoral race, told CBS News’ Tom Hanson that the recent ICE raids in Manhattan's Chinatown on Tuesday are the result of federal failures, not local ones, accusing the Trump administration of trying “to brutalize street vendors in New York City as a means by which to intimidate New Yorkers.” He added that, as mayor, he would “stand up to Donald Trump,” criticizing Mayor Eric Adams for “increasing coordination with that same federal government’s immigration directives” in an effort “to stay out of jail."

Michael Manley must be turning in his grave to see its destruction under the current government. We cannot accept that! The next PNP government will restore the National Housing Trust to its rightful role as the central agency for financing affordable home ownership in this country. Elizabeth Street Garden is one of the most beautiful parks in NYC and the only park in SoHo. Next week, the city plans to sell it to a builder for $1, and it’s set to become a homeless shelter. If someone wanted to destroy a neighborhood, it’s hard to imagine a better plan than this. Please ask Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani to reconsider this sale.
