Paul Whelan, a retired marine who was held in Russia for six years, stepped on U.S. soil Thursday night for the first time since 2018 after a complex prison swap freed three U.S. citizens and one U.S. green card holder. President Biden and Vice President Harris were on hand to welcome Whelan, Evan Gershkovich and Alsu Kurmasheva home.
