In its first week, the new administration has taken many steps to roll back climate progress. One I want to draw extra attention to is the repeal of an environmental justice Executive Order I was proud to champion in the Clinton-Gore White House. The video below shows a day's... worth of harmful particulate pollution flowing into a part of America known as "Cancer Alley." 66.9% of residents of Cancer Alley are Black. The poverty rate is nearly 50% higher in Cancer Alley than in the country as a whole. It is one of the most heavily polluted areas in the United States and the town of Reserve, Louisiana has the highest cancer risk in the U.S., at 50 times the national average. Decades of discriminatory practices have turned low-income communities and communities of color across the country into dumping grounds for pollution. Environmental justice isn't part of some imaginary "woke agenda." The Executive Order that was repealed last week focused on ending discrimination, not perpetuating it. This is a disappointing setback for those who seek to put an end to this longstanding injustice. But environmental justice advocates are among the most active and effective voices in the global grassroots movement for environmental protection and climate action. I look forward to continuing to lock arms with them in our struggle for a cleaner future.show more

Pollution rules are the same everywhere. Are they being enforced here? Wikipedia says: In 2015, the United States Environmental Protection Agency reported findings of the existence of an extremely high risk of cancer in the region and noted that Reserve was the epicenter of the area of high risk for cancer. The agency identified releases of the chemical compound chloroprene as responsible for the high risk. This chemical compound was being released from the Pontchartrain Works facility, a manufacturing facility owned and operated for decades by DuPont and sold in 2015 to Denka of Japan. The facility is the only producer of the chemical in the United States.

I’ve spent the past three days in Louisiana taking part in events organized by local community leaders to highlight the devastating impacts of the climate crisis — from Hurricane Katrina to the region dominated by the petrochemical industry known as Cancer Alley. I was deeply moved by the stories from Sharon Lavigne, risestjames and the many people from across the River Parishes who have seen the lives of their sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters cut short by the toxic chemicals in the air they breathe, water they drink, and food they eat. I had the opportunity to join my daughter Karenna as she led a dialogue for COP30’s Global Ethical Stocktake with those who work at the intersection of faith, environmental justice, and climate advocacy. It was made all the more powerful by our surroundings at the TEP Center with civil rights pioneer, Dr. Leona Tate. Today, I was honored to participate in the community commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in the lower Ninth Ward. During Katrina, the levees failed. But so did the policies that have perpetuated environmental injustice and placed this community on the frontlines of the climate crisis. And so did the programs that were supposed to support the survivors of this disaster. We cannot continue to fail the people of Louisiana by using the sky as if it were an open sewer. We need to move swiftly to phase out the fossil fuels that are killing people with pollution in Cancer Alley and fueling stronger and more frequent extreme weather. When the rain comes, when the storms hit, when the drought dries up the water, when the ice melts and the sea level rises, remember these warnings came. Listen to the scientists who are warning us. Listen to the people of Cancer Alley, of the Lower Ninth Ward, and of all of the frontline communities who are demanding action. Cervical cancer is among the top 4 most common cancers in the world and ranks 3rd in Pakistan among the most prevalent cancers in women. Around 50–60 women per million are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year in Pakistan, and this figure is still speculative because of the lack of tools and screening for monitoring this cancer. The actual numbers may be much higher. Every year, about 3,200 women die in Pakistan from a disease that has a preventive vaccine. WHO standards suggest that all girls aged 9–14 should be vaccinated with the HPV vaccine to help end this deadly form of cancer. More than 100 countries routinely administer this vaccine as part of their immunisation schedule. In Pakistan, a two-week vaccination campaign has been started by the Government of Sindh, running from 15th to 27th September 2025. The purpose of this campaign is to provide the vaccine free of cost to girls across the province to protect them from cervical cancer in the future. I urge all parents to take their daughters to these vaccination centres and make sure they are immunised against this virus, to prevent the occurrence of cervical cancer as they grow up. Prevention is easier than cure and it saves lives.

There are grave environmental threats that we are facing. Great Nicobar project is one such example. I myself have written to Rajnath Singh ji and also given suggestions on how this can be done while respecting environmental laws and tribal laws. We have the issue of coal mining in rich forest areas of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. We have the problem of the unpredictability of the monsoon, which is attributable to climate change. We have the problem of heat stress and the issue of the Aravalli Hills. We have to balance environmental concerns with growth imperatives. We need faster economic growth and higher GDP growth. But in the name of ease of doing business, the Modi government is basically knocking down environmental laws, knocking out all environmental regulations, and weakening environmental standards. Pollution is no longer just an environmental issue; it is fundamentally related to public health issues. I stood on the steps of the Supreme Court Monday . Donald Trump has done real things for MAHA. I believe that. But when the Department of Justice shows up to defend Bayer and Monsanto against the American people, against the health of our children, I have to say: you got this one wrong. Liability protection for corporations that poison people is not a conservative value. It is not a Republican value. It is not a Democratic value. It is not an American value. It is the opposite of a free market. It is the government putting its thumb on the scale for corporations that are losing in court because their products are causing cancer. Every child in this country deserves to be healthy. That is not a political statement. That is the only statement that matters. So in the words of the President himself: we are going to fight, fight.

In yesterday’s debate on the govt’s plans to hand Chagos to Mauritius (& pay them a fortune), I didn’t hear a single Labour backbencher speak in favour. There are so many reasons why it’s an appalling plan- for our security, our finances, and for the environment. We are handing one of the most biodiverse and pristine areas with near 100% protection today to a country that ranks amongst the lowest in terms of nature protection and whose politicians have already admitted they will allow industrial fishing to return to 99% of the waters. This was one of the great environmental successes in my lifetime, and we are simply knocking it on the head - for no obvious reason.

Trump says he didn’t Lock Hillary Clinton up because he was Trying to Unite the Country and it would have set a horrible precedent to lock up the Secretary of State and the wife of a former President in an already toxic country under Obama… BUT… now people are going to start looking at it differently… 👈 THIS I continue to believe that Donald Trump HAD TO set the precedent first, in order for the kind of justice and changes that is on the horizon.

It was great to be in Kansas City today to place the final beam on the brand-new KU Cancer Center building alongside the leadership of KU Cancer Center, The University of Kansas Health System and University of Kansas. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I have secured $115 million in federal resources to construct and equip this state-of-the-art facility. The center will bring world-class cancer services to the region, creating the very best opportunities for Kansans and Missourians to access cancer treatments and care right here in the Heartland. I have had a dream for our state since before I was elected to the U.S. Senate: that Kansans interested in science, engineering, research and innovation have an opportunity to fulfill their educational potential, build a career and raise a family right here in our state. This project is helping do just that. It is a good thing for our state, and I’m pleased to see the progress being made at the KU Cancer Center.

I am sorry but Dr Pal Manickam, the Gastroenterologist from California, is becoming not just a health misinformation menace, but also a subtle "hate-monger" with his divisive attitude towards dietary choices in India, also known as Bharat, a Union of States and marriage of [dietary] cultures and traditions. Claims: 1. Eating red meat (beef and pork) causes colon cancer 2. Nitrosamines (from nitrites/nitrates) in red meat causes colon cancer 3. Cancer screening in USA above age of 50, but not in India 4. Kerala has maximum number of colon cancers in India 5. Kerala has maximum number of colon cancers because Malayalees eat a lot of beef. A lot. Response: 1. Eating red meat does not cause colon cancer Higher red meat consumption was shown to have a correlation with increased risk for colon cancer, but the evidence for independent association was weak and remains weak Eating red meat does not increase risk of colon cancer. Excessive consumption of red meat/ processed meat (excessive not yet fully defined across populations) was confusingly correlated with increased risk of colon cancer 2. Studies have only looked at nitrites and nitrates [and hence nitrosamine formation] causing stomach cancer and not colon cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) also focussed on nitrosamines and stomach cancer, but the potential role for dietary nitrate/nitrite in colon cancer is not conclusively proven. Meat-based diets (specifically processed meat, not fresh meat) have a well described higher risk for cancer, but it is not readily attributable to nitrite consistently in all studies. Most studies are on ground and well water and not meat. And the strongest study to show cancer link and nitrite consumption is in mice, not humans The biggest source of nitrate exposure is dietary consumption of certain types of vegetables that are naturally high in nitrate. This is a clear case of investigator bias, looking at any possible way to force the data into a specific conclusion (like Dr. Pal is doing in the video). The IARC maintains the tone of its conclusion, but only to reiterate its validity in a theoretical state, while acknowledging that the epidemiology does to support these conclusions. Nitrites are just one reason processed meats may contribute to bowel cancer, and their relative importance is uncertain. Other factors that may contribute include iron; PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) which are formed in smoked meats; and HCAs (heterocyclic amines), which are created when meat is cooked over an open flame – and which also are tumour-promoting. So its not just red meat, but the cooking method signficantly affecting health outcomes. 3. India does not have a national level screening protocol because the proportion of colon cancer among all cancers in India is only 3% which would lead to wastage of medical resources on a low-incidence cancer detection protocol. But in the USA, colon cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death. Overall, the lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 23 for men and 1 in 26 for women - which is much much higher compared to India and that is why they have screening protocols in place - not because they eat more red meat than Indians. 4. Oh by the way, about pork and colon cancer --> the risk was not increased consuming high amounts of pork: and there is only one study showing colon cancer risk in women in Japan, not India and that too who consumed pork >/= 3 times/week compared to </=1 time: Add-on: The risk for colon cancer is not red meat alone (with weak evidence), but more importantly (with stronger evidence), alcohol use, smoking, family history of cancer, presence of inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and polyps or adenoma of colon. These have been very conviniently ignored by the Gastroenterologist from California. Summary - red meat causing colon cancer is not convincingly proven. Increased intake of processed red meat more than higher intake of unprocessed red meat is weakly linked from evidence point of view to colon cancer risk. Nitrosamine in red meat as cancer causing in humans is not proven. Kerala does not have the largest burden of colon cancer in India, nor it is the largest consumer of beef. There is no realistic evidence that eating pork increases risk of colon cancer. These are actual facts. And I am not even a Gastroenterologist from California. I am a Hepatologist. From India.

I am sorry but Dr Pal Manickam, the Gastroenterologist from California, is becoming not just a health misinformation menace, but also a subtle "hate-monger" with his divisive attitude towards dietary choices in India, also known as Bharat, a Union of States and marriage of [dietary] cultures and traditions. Claims: 1. Eating red meat (beef and pork) causes colon cancer 2. Nitrosamines (from nitrites/nitrates) in red meat causes colon cancer 3. Cancer screening in USA above age of 50, but not in India 4. Kerala has maximum number of colon cancers in India 5. Kerala has maximum number of colon cancers because Malayalees eat a lot of beef. A lot. Response: 1. Eating red meat does not cause colon cancer Higher red meat consumption was shown to have a correlation with increased risk for colon cancer, but the evidence for independent association was weak and remains weak Eating red meat does not increase risk of colon cancer. Excessive consumption of red meat/ processed meat (excessive not yet fully defined across populations) was confusingly correlated with increased risk of colon cancer 2. Studies have only looked at nitrites and nitrates [and hence nitrosamine formation] causing stomach cancer and not colon cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) also focussed on nitrosamines and stomach cancer, but the potential role for dietary nitrate/nitrite in colon cancer is not conclusively proven. Meat-based diets (specifically processed meat, not fresh meat) have a well described higher risk for cancer, but it is not readily attributable to nitrite consistently in all studies. Most studies are on ground and well water and not meat. And the strongest study to show cancer link and nitrite consumption is in mice, not humans The biggest source of nitrate exposure is dietary consumption of certain types of vegetables that are naturally high in nitrate. This is a clear case of investigator bias, looking at any possible way to force the data into a specific conclusion (like Dr. Pal is doing in the video). The IARC maintains the tone of its conclusion, but only to reiterate its validity in a theoretical state, while acknowledging that the epidemiology does to support these conclusions. Nitrites are just one reason processed meats may contribute to bowel cancer, and their relative importance is uncertain. Other factors that may contribute include iron; PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) which are formed in smoked meats; and HCAs (heterocyclic amines), which are created when meat is cooked over an open flame – and which also are tumour-promoting. So its not just red meat, but the cooking method signficantly affecting health outcomes. 3. India does not have a national level screening protocol because the proportion of colon cancer among all cancers in India is only 3% which would lead to wastage of medical resources on a low-incidence cancer detection protocol. But in the USA, colon cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death. Overall, the lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 23 for men and 1 in 26 for women - which is much much higher compared to India and that is why they have screening protocols in place - not because they eat more red meat than Indians. 4. In fact, the whole world. But even before that, the relationship of Iran in terms of energy with India and other countries was damaged. China continued to buy Iranian oil. It still does. So I think the collateral damage has been happening for years on this. The attempt has been to isolate Iran from its region where it lives. And India is the biggest country in the region essentially, in terms of population and the economy, next to China.
