Alaska has the highest suicide rate in the United States, at more than double the national average. In 2025, more young people in Alaska died by suicide than in any other year in the past decade. I appreciated the chance to engage with Dr. Westlake, nominee to be HHS Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, about how we can improve Alaska’s mental health outcomes. It must start with addressing our severe shortage of mental health professionals, and I will work with Dr. Westlake to increase access to providers across our state.

Football and sport have the power to unite the world. But also, football and other sports help to prevent heart disease, cancer and diabetes and can also improve mental health and wellbeing. The partnership between World Health Organization (WHO) and FIFA has allowed us to promote physical activity and healthy food, including at the World Cup and many other FIFA events. We will continue to work together to strengthen the links between the global game and global health.
