“I like to have the target on my back.” With the U.S. Open main draw beginning on Sunday, Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s top-ranked women’s tennis player, remains in prime position to fulfill her wildest aspirations: a third straight U.S. Open victory. If she wins, despite underperforming at other Grand Slams this year, she would become the first player since Serena Williams to win the tournament three times in a row and just the third woman in the modern era to do so. The red lights you might have seen on the nets are an extension of the line-calling technology, which replaced line judges on courts by 2022. This is the system making all the “out” calls. TIME video producer Alyona Uvarova spoke with U.S. Open tournament referee Jake Garner about how the technology works.

After a U.S. Open match was briefly halted on Monday to ask content creators to turn off a ring light, tournament referee Jake Garner commented on the incident and proper etiquette during matches. In the days since, the U.S. Open has also begun displaying signs around the tournament grounds reminding attendees: “Please refrain from the use of flash photography or other lighting. Thank you and enjoy the tennis.”

🚨UPDATE: The U.S. veteran, who was violently assaulted and illegally arrested by ICE agents in Maryland… has been released with no charges filed. And here’s the part that keeps getting ignored… ICE agents claimed THEY had a video of the U.S. veteran assaulting an agent. But when asked for the video, no video was provided, and the U.S. veteran was released without charges. Meanwhile, there are multiple videos, and eyewitness accounts, showing the U.S. veteran being the one who was assaulted. And this is the pattern that keeps repeating… ICE agents use force and arrest someone without probable cause. The agents create a narrative after the fact. “Evidence” is claimed, but never released. Contradictory footage, from the public, circulates. And still no consequences for the agents involved. Because even after all of this, the agents are still on the streets. And the public is expected to just move on… like this is normal, like this is acceptable, like this is simply how things work now… Instead of acknowledging the pattern that needs to be addressed, and holding agents accountable.

Starts by saying “I don’t know” then gives an incredible four-part answer: ▫️Modern coaches grew up playing two-handed backhand and passed it down to students. ▫️One-handed backhands take a lot of time to perfect control and coaches/players don’t want to dedicate the time when they can make faster improvements elsewhere. ▫️Tennis went from 50/50 between baseline and net play to 90/10 baseline play (two-handed backhands much more useful for defensive and sliding baseline play). ▫️Equipment for tennis has changed (stiffer strings, modern rackets, heavier balls) and slower surfaces…more difficult to attack with only one hand. *** Tennis Channel link:
