The route is one of the major approaches used during Arba’in, when millions of pilgrims converge on Karbala to commemorate the 40th day following the martyrdom of Imam Hussein at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Iraqi security forces and Popular Mobilization formations traditionally deploy extensively along pilgrimage routes during Arba’in to protect the enormous flow of pilgrims, checkpoints, rest stations and mawakib providing food, water and accommodation.
