On June 24, 1947, Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine bright objects flying in formation while flying near Mount Rainier. He was the first pilot whose sighting became a worldwide media sensation, and his report led newspapers to coin the term "flying saucer." However, Arnold was not describing the UFOs as saucers. He was describing their motion, saying they moved "like a saucer skipping across water." He described the objects as thin and flat, crescent-shaped or half-moon-shaped. One object appeared more like a boomerang or horseshoe than the others. They had no visible tail or wings and reflected sunlight, giving them a bright, metallic appearance. Finally after 79 years from that event, the government has released footage of UFOs that move exactly as Kenneth Arnold described them. In the second part of my video, you can see four thin, flat objects flying up and down, just like a saucer skipping across water.

Luc Mehl waited all winter for the opportunity to play with—and learn more about—candle ice. Luc is an ice rescue instructor based in Anchorage, Alaska. Columnar ice forms when the initial ice growth is fast and there are many nucleation points, which results in smaller crystals on the surface of the water. Once the crystals can’t grow larger at the surface, they grow down into the water, forming columns. Candle ice forms when the boundaries between columnar ice melt. The ice rapidly weakens and can’t support weight—very dangerous conditions for travelers. During the winter, Luc visited this lake twelve times to create a mental map of the different ice zones. This is Alaca Höyük’s Sphinx Gate, one of the most striking Hittite monuments in Türkiye. Ancient walls did not only keep enemies out. Sometimes they told visitors exactly who ruled the world inside.

I didn't quite understand what I was seeing at the time - but - this is the door opening and you can see the atmosphere blowing out, the narrow strip of illumination made it look a bit like the surface of water.
